Computer Aided Architecture design 2

Answer the following questions

1.What is parametric Modelling in architecture?
Parametric modelling (or parametric design) is the creation of a digital model based on a series of pre-programmed
rules or algorithms known as 'parameters' rather than by being manually manipulated , parametric rules create
relationships between different elements of the design. So for example, a rule might be created to ensure that walls
must start at floor level and reach the underside of the ceiling. Then if the floor to ceiling height is changed, the walls
will automatically adjust to suit. The same algorithm might be used throughout a model so that if a particular
element or rule is changed, it changes throughout the model.

2.Applications and usability of parametric modelling

Rhinoscript, Mayascript, Dynamo and Grasshopper are advanced programs used in parametric modeling.

Parametric modeling programs offer users two different modeling windows for modeling. One of these windows is
used to generate the algorithm, while the other is used to display the geometry resulting from the algorithm.

Each component works with input and output logic when creating the algorithm. In order to establish a relationship
between the parameters, the output of a parameter is linked to the input of another parameter in the network
system. In this way, the desired change to be made in the model that is created depending on the algorithm will be
provided by presenting of the new geometry which is created by changing the parameter to the user.

3. What is BIM ?
BIM was defined by PAS 1192-2:20131 as ‘Building Information Modelling’ and as a ‘process of designing,
constructing or operating a building or infrastructure asset using electronic object-oriented information’.

• It is a process, not a single technology solution or software. In fact, it is a collaborative process enabled by
technology

• It covers the whole life-cycle from designing through to constructing and operating an asset

• It equally applies to buildings or infrastructure assets

The superseding BS EN ISO 196502 now defines BIM as ‘the use of a shared digital representation of a built asset to
facilitate design, construction and operation processes to form a reliable basis for decisions.

Building information modelling (BIM) is an intelligent software modelling process that architects, engineers, and
contractors can use to collaborate on a building’s design, construction, and operation.

4. What is the relation between BIM and Revit?

Building Information Modelling (BIM) refers to the process of intelligent 3D modelling that aids in the initial planning
and design of a commercial building or civil infrastructure, the physical construction phase, as well as management on a
post-construction basis. Revit is simply an example of a BIM platform that is used in the creation of BIM models.

5. Examples of BIM application in Revit

 Model shapes, structures, and systems in 3D with parametric accuracy, precision, and ease
 Streamline documentation work, with instant revisions to plans, elevations, schedules, and sections as
projects change
 Empower multidisciplinary teams with specialty toolsets and a unified project environment ( multiple team
members can work on the same project at the same time in a centrally shared model.)

6. What are the differences between BIM and Revit?

BIM is a process/methodology/technology by which we can create and coordinate 3D building models and Revit is a
software (one of the BIM tools), widely used all over the world for the purpose of creating such 3D BIM Models.

The core of BIM is information needed for the construction of a building. Revit is a software by Autodesk built for BIM
with the features for architectural, MEP- (mechanical, electrical, plumbing), and structural disciplines of the AEC
industry.

7. What are the benefits of BIM ?

Preconstruction Benefits to Owner (to determine whether a building of a given size, quality level, and desired
program requirements can be built within a given cost and time budget.)

Increased Building Performance and Quality (Developing a schematic model prior to generating a detailed building
model allows for a more careful evaluation of the proposed scheme to determine whether it meets the building’s
functional and sustainable requirements)

Improved Collaboration Using Integrated Project Delivery (, BIM can be used by the project team from the
beginning of the design to improve their understanding of project requirements and to extract cost estimates as the
design is developed)

Earlier and More Accurate Visualizations of a Design

Automatic Low-Level Corrections When Changes Are Made to Design

Generation of Accurate and Consistent 2D Drawings at Any Stage of the Design

Contractors by Chuck Eastman Paul Teicholz Rafael Sacks Kathleen Liston.

Conclusion:
Parametric modelling is a set of rules (parameters) that create the relashionship between
elements of design rather than modelling it manually.
BIM is the process of making 3d models and enables architects , engineers and the whole
project team to collaborate
Revit is a platform for BIM to design models.
