1. How did Dr. Shereen El Feki start her speech? What is her reason for presenting Barbie
and Fulla dressed up differently from one another?
Answer: Dr. Shereen El Feki start her speech with an introduction and greeted the audience. The
reason is that she wants to highlight the cultural differences between the two dolls and how they
reflect different cultural norms and values. Dr. El Feki's reason for presenting them dressed
differently may have been to explore the ways in which cultural values and identities shape our
ideas about beauty, femininity, and social norms.
2. What do you think is the meaning of ‘clash of civilizations’ as mentioned by Dr. El Feki
in the video clip?
Answer: It is a cultural and religious differences between civilizations, rather than ideological or
economic differences, these civilizations are said to be fundamentally incompatible and will
inevitably come into conflict with one another.
3. What is Islamic cross-cultural hybridization? Do you think Fulla, 4Shbab and The 99
who represent the Arab pop culture are effective avenues in promoting the mix up of
strands of other cultures with their own? Support your answer with specific details.
Answer: Islamic cross-cultural hybridization refers to the blending of Islamic cultural and
religious practices with those of other cultures. This can occur through a variety of channels,
including migration, globalization, and cultural exchange. Fulla, 4Shbab, and the 99 are
examples of Arab pop culture products that have been created to promote Islamic cross-cultural
hybridization. These products can be effective avenues in promoting the mix-up of strands of
other cultures with Islamic culture. They provide a platform for Muslims to express their identity
in ways that are both modern and rooted in their faith. They also promote cross-cultural
understanding by highlighting the similarities and differences between different cultures and
religions. Fulla, 4Shbab, and The 99 can be effective in promoting cross-cultural hybridization,
but their effectiveness may depend on how they are perceived by different audiences and how
they are used to promote cultural understanding and dialogue.
4. What do you think is the implication of this ‘Islamic cross-cultural hybridization’ on
effective intercultural communication?
NARRATIVE ESSAY
Growing up, I was always fascinated by the power of words. I loved to read and write,
and I found that verbal communication came naturally to me. I was always the one to raise my
hand in class and engage in conversations with my peers. I loved the way words could convey
complex ideas and emotions, and I found great satisfaction in being able to articulate my
thoughts clearly. Verbal communication, which involves speaking or writing words to
communicate a message, is one of the most popular forms of communication. Verbal
communication can occur in a variety of contexts, such as face-to-face interactions, telephone
and video calls, meetings, and presentations. Compared to other forms of communication, verbal
communication enables us to express ourselves in a more complex and detailed manner because
it allows us to communicate meaning through tone, intonation, and body language. As I grew
older, I began to understand that verbal communication wasn't the only form there was. In my
contacts with others, I started to become aware of the importance of nonverbal communication.
A grin, a frown, a head nod—all of these facial expressions could say so much without uttering a
single word. However, because words can have various connotations or meanings depending on
the context, verbal communication can also be open to misunderstanding.
Another mode of communication is nonverbal communication, which involves conveying
meaning without using words. Nonverbal communication includes facial expressions, gestures,
posture, and eye contact, among others. Nonverbal communication can often convey more
information than verbal communication, as it can express emotions, attitudes, and intentions that
may not be explicitly stated. For example, a person's facial expression can convey whether they
are happy, sad, angry, or confused, which can help us interpret their message more accurately.
However, nonverbal communication can also be subject to misinterpretation, as different cultures
and individuals may interpret nonverbal cues differently.
Of course, each form of communication has drawbacks as well. There are situations when
verbal communication results in misconceptions or misinterpretations. Written communication
may lack the emotional complexity of face-to-face engagement and nonverbal communication
can be readily misunderstood. But by being conscious of these constraints, we can develop the
ability to modify our communication approach to suit the circumstance.
In summary, communication is a complicated process that involves a variety of
communication channels. While nonverbal communication can reveal attitudes and emotions that
may not be explicitly expressed, verbal communication allows us to express ourselves fully.
Visual communication simplifies complex thoughts or data, but written communication is
frequently more formal and allows us to communicate with those who are not physically present.
We may communicate more effectively and forge better bonds with others by being aware of the
various communication channels and employing them wisely.
Communication modes play a crucial role in our daily lives. Whether we're speaking,
writing, or using non-verbal cues, each mode has its own unique strengths and weaknesses. By
learning to appreciate the different modes of communication and adapting our style to fit the
situation, we can become better communicators and build stronger connections with the people
around us.
