LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE COUNTRY IN BHOPAL CAPITAL OF
MADHYA PRADESH.

ACCESSED BY SWAMINATHAN MARG. VARIOUS PUBLIC SCHOOLS, A
POLYTECHNIC, AND CM'S HOUSE ARE NEARBY

FUNCTIONS: IT HOUSES AN ART GALLERY, FINE ART WORKSHOPS, AN


OPEN-AIR AMPHITHEATRE, A STUDIO THEATRE, AN AUDITORIUM, A
MUSEUM OF TRIBAL AND FOLK ART, AND LIBRARIES OF INDIAN
POETRY. CLASSICAL MUSIC AS WELL AS FOLK MUSIC

ARCHITECTURE: CHARLES CORREA THE ARCHITECT FOUND HERE THE


POSSIBILITIES OF A SERIES OF TERRACED GARDENS, WHICH WOULD
BE SEEN CASCADING DOWN TO THE LAKE. THE VISITORS ENTER AT
THE HIGHEST LEVEL AND WALK DOWN A PEDESTRIAN SPINE, FLANKED
BY A PATTERN OF COURTYARDS, TO REACH THE VARIOUS PARTS OF
THE COMPLEX.

ARCHITECTURE & FLOW
THE TERRACES AND COURTYARDS REFLECT CORREA'S CONCERN WITH
PROGRESSION THROUGH SPACE - THE MAZE OR PUZZLE - WHERE PARTS ARE
CASUALLY RELIEVED AND THE COMPLEX OF INTERNAL STREET ACT RATHER LIKE A
VILLAGE LAYOUT.

THE SITE IS ON A GENTLY SLOPING PLATEAU OVERLOOKING THE LAKE SUCH THAT
CONTOURS ARE USED IN DESIGN.
THE NATURAL CONTOURS HAVE BEEN USED TO CREATE A SERIES OF SUNKEN
COURTS AND TERRACE GARDENS AROUND WHICH ARE CULTURAL FACILITIES.

THE TERRACES AND COURTYARDS ARE CONNECTED LIKE A PROGRESSION IN


SPACE, WHERE A COMPLEX OF INTERNAL STREETS ACTS LIKE A VILLAGE LAYOUT.

IT CAN ALSO BE CALLED AS A NON-BUILDING THAT CORRESPONDS TO THE


CONTEXT IN A VERY POSITIVE WAY.

THE VIEW OF THE LAKE IS VISIBLE FROM ALL POSSIBLE TERRACES.

THE MATERIALS USED ARE RED SANDSTONE, BRICK SAND, AND EXPOSED
CONCRETE.

THE INTERNAL FINISH IS OF MARBLE, GRANITE, AND SANDSTONE.

THE OAT CALLED BHAIRANG IS LOCATED NEAR THE LAKE GIVING AN IDEAL VIEW
FOR CULTURAL PERFORMANCES.

THE PROPORTIONS OF THE BUILDING ARE WELL ORDERED, BORROWING


GEOMETRIC PATTERNS FROM INDIAN CULTURES MAKING IT MORE RELEVANT TO
CONTEXT.

EACH CURVE AND SPACE DEFINES ITSELF. EACH OF THE PARTS OF THE BUILDING IS

DISTINCT YET FLOWS EASILY WITH ONE ANOTHER, LINKED BY MEANDERING PATHS.

BUILT INTO A HILLSIDE WHICH SLOPES DOWN TOWARD A LAKE, A SERIES OF
TERRACES AND COURTYARDS COMPRISE THE COMPLEX. UPON ENTERING, THE
VISITOR HAS THE CHOICE OF FOLLOWING THE PATH OF TERRACES CASCADING
FORM &
DOWN TO THE LAKE, OR DESCENDING TO THE THREE COURTYARDS WHICH
PROVIDE ACCESS TO THE MAJORITY OF THE CULTURAL FACILITIES. THESE
INCLUDE CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERIES, A MUSEUM OF TRIBAL ART, AN
AUDITORIUM, A LIBRARY OF INDIAN POETRY, A PRINT SHOP, AND A STUDIO FOR
CONCEPT
AN ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE. FROM THE COURTYARDS, WIDE GLASS-PANELED
OPENINGS TO THE BUILDINGS ENSURE THE ARTS PROGRAM IS BOTH LITERALLY
AND FIGURATIVELY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SITE SITS AN
AMPHITHEATER, WHERE OPEN-AIR PERFORMANCES TAKE PLACE WITH THE LAKE
FORMING A NATURAL BACKDROP.

THE ROUTE THROUGH THE TERRACES ENCOURAGES MOVEMENT DOWN THE


SITE’S NATURAL GRADIENT, WITH THE COURTYARDS PROVIDING TRANQUIL
SPACES FOR REST AND RELAXATION. THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN THESE TWO
COMPONENTS CREATES AN EBB AND FLOW OF ENERGY AROUND THE
COMPLEX, IN WHAT CORREA DESCRIBED AS A “RITUALISTIC PATHWAY”. THE
RITUAL OF FOLLOWING A SACRED PATHWAY IS, HE CLAIMS, “A UNIVERSAL
IMPULSE, FOUND IN ALL CULTURES AND RELIGIONS.” CORREA EMPHASIZED THE
SPIRITUALITY OF HIS OWN PATHWAYS BY DRAWING PARALLELS WITH THOSE
FOUND IN RELIGIOUS ARCHITECTURE, INCLUDING “THE SUN TEMPLES OF SUVASH YADAV
MEXICO” AND THE HINDU TEMPLES OF BALI “WITH THEIR RITUALISTIC
BHOOMI BORA
PATHWAYS UP THE HILLSIDE.”
