Fender Calculation
PORT FENDER CALCULATION
A. Method Review:
First, a calculation is carried out to determine the energy of the ship's impact based on the size of the largest
ship leaning on the wharf, from this energy the energy absorbed by the wharf is obtained, and then
determine the size and type of fender that is able to absorb energy from ship collisions based on the
appropriate fender criteria

B. Initial Data
1. Maximum Berthing Ship
Ship Name NASAYEM 1
Type Landing Craft
IMO No. 9840582

Principal Dimension
LOA 79,8 m
LBP 74,545 m
Beam 21,946 m
Depth (h) 5,486 m
Draft (d) 4,2 m
Cb 0,85 m

Weight Principle
DWT 400 T
Summer Displacement 5630 T
GRT 2430 T
NRT 729 T

B. Calculations
1. Load in Fender
a. Added Mass Coefficient (Cm)

The added mass coefficient (Cm) allows for the body of water
carried along with the ship as it moves sideways through the water

Formula :

d= 4,2 m
Cb = 0,85 m
B = 21,946 m

Cm = 1,35 1

b. Eccentricity Coefficient (Ce)

The eccentricity coefficient (Ce) allows for the energy dissipated by

rotation of the ship about its point of impact with the fenders

Formula :

l= 19,95 m
r= 19,40

Ce = 0,49
c. Roughness Coefficient (Cs)

Where fenders are hard relative to the flexibility of the ship's hull.

Cs = 1,0
[Reff. PIANC (2002) Table 4.13]
d. Berth Configuration Coefficient (Cc)
When ships berth at small angles againts solid structures, the water
between hull and quay acts as a cushion and dissipates a small part
of the berthing energy

Cc = 1,0
[Reff. PIANC (2002) Table 4.12]
e. The perpendicular component of the ship's speed (V)
V= 0,26 m/s
f. Ship's Total Weight (W)
W = [0.25 x 3.14 x d^2 x B x 1.025 x 2/3) + Displacement]

Displacement = 5630 T
d= 4,2 m
B = 21,946 m

W = 5837,7 Ton
g. Berthing Energy Calculation
Formula :

W = 5837,7 Ton
V = 0,26 m/s
Cm = 1,35
Ce = 0,49
Cs = 1,0
Cc = 1,0

EN = 13,231 tonM or
= 132,31 kNm

- Highly efficient geometry
- Minimal performance loss even at large berthing angles
- Stable shape resists shear
- Wide choice of rubber grades

2. Cone Dimension

H = 700 mm
OW = 1120 mm
OU = 685 mm
C = 52 mm
D = 42 mm

3. Cone Performance Data

Reacting rated (RR) = 474,7
Reacting energy (RE) = 189,3 (acceptable 40%)

4. Frontal Pad
Consideration : Maximum berthing ship displacement is 5630 T
: Estimate hull pressure is < 400 kN/m^2 (reff : Trelleborg, 2009)

Frontal Pad Dimension

Panel width (W) = 2,0 m
Panel height (H) = 3,3 m
Allowable Pressure (P) = 71,924 kN/m^2 (acceptable)

5. Distance between fender

Maximal distance (L max)
Formula :

r = 19,382 m
h = 5,486 m

L max = 27,023 m

Minimum Distance (L min)

(one-third of the LBP of the smallest ship capable of docking)

L min = 9,329 m 4
