Purpose:
The purpose of this SOP is to establish procedures for proper selection,use
and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE).
This SOP describes:
When PPE is necessary?
What PPE is necessary?
How to properly put on (Donning), take off (Doffing), adjust and wear
the PPE?
The limitations of the PPE?
Scope:
This SOP applies to all laboratory staff who use PPE within Minia
Conjoint Laboratory and is used when determined necessary by risk
assessment to provide personnel protection from potentially infectious
and hazardous materials.
Responsibilities:
1) Laboratory safety responsible ensures that:
a. This SOP is established and implemented effectively
b. PPE is properly selected, stored and used
c. Staff are trained on this procedure and competent prior to PPE use
2) Laboratory worker who use PPE:
a. Follow the procedures outlined in this SOP
b. Properly wear PPE,
c. Attend training sessions on PPE,
d. Care for, clean and maintain PPE, and
e. Inform a supervisor of the need to repair or replace PPE.
3)Laboratory Manager ensures that:
a. PPE is ordered in appropriate styles/sizes.
b. PPE supplies are adequately maintained including replacing worn or
damaged PPE.
c. Periodically reviewing, updating and evaluating the effectiveness of the
PPE SOP.

Procedures:
A. PPE Requirement/Hazard Assessment
Personal protective equipment is not a substitute for effective
engineering, administrative controls, safe work practices, or other
control measures and should be utilized as a last resort when other
controls are not sufficient to create a safe work area.
General Instructions:
PPE must be used, maintained and stored in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions.
PPE must be visually inspected before each use and any damaged
PPE must not be used.
PPE worn within the laboratory should not be worn outside the
Laboratory or other places accessible to the public.
Laboratory Worker should take off any accessories before using
PPE.

Donning Gloves:
Wash your hand .
Dry your hand with paper tissue then dispose the tissue.
Check gloves for visible tears before use.
Wear the suitable gloves - Extend to cover wrist of isolation gown
Avoid touching or adjusting another PPE and keep gloved hands
away from face.
If gloves are teared or wetted change it at once.

Laboratory worker must use appropriate eye or face protection when exposed to eye
or face hazards:
Safety Goggles
Safety goggles are tight-fitting eye protection that completely cover the eyes,
eye sockets and the facial area around the eyes and provide protection from
impact, dust,, mists, and splashes.
Safety goggles can be worn over prescription lenses.
Safety goggles are available with perforated, port-vented, or non-vented
frames.Safety goggles should be worn when working with liquids that may
splash or if vapor or airborne particulate protection is required.
Face Shields
Face shields provide general protection to the entire face for a variety of
hazards, such as chemical splash and extreme heat.
Impact rated face shields can be worn or face shields must be worn over
primary eye protection ( goggles) when there is a potential exposure to flying
fragments or objects, hot sparks from furnace operations, potentialand
extreme temperatures.

Doffing goggles and face shields:
Outside of goggles or face shield is contaminated!
To remove, handle by head band or ear pieces
Place in designated receptacle for reprocessing or in waste
container
Respiratory Protection:
Surgical Mask Donning
Perform hand hygiene
Carefully grab the mask holding the ear loops.
Without touching the outside of the mask, carefully place the mask
on your face.
Remove gloves if used and perform hand hygiene.
Surgical Mask Doffing (Removal)
Perform hand hygiene.
Remove mask by holding the ear loops. The front is contaminated
so remove it slowly and carefully.
Perform hand hygiene.
Body Protection:
Laboratory Coat
Analyst must wear a laboratory coat when inside the lab, and especially when
handling hazardous materials. Lab coats protect clothing and prevent contact
with hazardous materials. Laboratory coats should:
Never be worn(remove) outside of the active laboratory area except
when transporting materials through a hallway to another designated
lab area 7

Fit properly
Be fastened with snaps at all times while in the lab (snaps are
preferred to buttons as they allow for quick removal in the event of
an emergency)
Be cleaned regularly and separately from all other clothing
Fully cover the arms to the wrist – short sleeve lab coats are not
permitted in wet labs
Be tucked into the glove or secured at the wrist to prevent exposing
the skin between the lab coat at the glove as well as to prevent the
sleeve from catching on equipment or coming in contact with other
hazards in the working area
