V. IRIS - GENERAL THEORY

IRIS inspection is an ultrasonic immersion pulse echo technique. A transducer located inside a turbine generates an ultrasound pulse along the axis of the tube.
The ultrasound is reflected on a 45° mirror and oriented toward the tube wall. When it reaches the internal surface of the tube, the ultrasound is partially reflected,
then transmitted inside the tube wall, and finally reflected on the outside surface.
The tube wall thickness can be calculated by using the ultrasound velocity in the tube material and the time of flight different between the outer and inside
diameter echoes. A water flow is going inside the cable, through the turbine and rotates continuously the mirror. This rotation allows a full inspection of the tube
wall thickness.

VIII. CALIBRATION SIGNAL

Table 1 below shows the comparison the IRIS result performed on Calibration tube and its certificate. The result indicated the measurement
from IRIS well matched with values on the certificate.

Immersion technique - using IRIS with rectilinear display of 360° circumference at 100% of tube area scanned. The ultrasonic beam maps out a spiral along the tube length,
therefore if the probe pulling speed is sufficiently low enough, the scan will follow a helical overlap of each individual rotation (taking into account the inspection parameters),
giving a 100% coverage of the tube surface.

VI. CALIBRATION TUBE

The following calibration tube had been used:


s Inspection Calibration Tube Dimensions: Ø 25.4 mm x WT 2.77 mm
s Material: Carbon Steel

The calibration tube of carbon steel material with 2.77 mm wall thickness is manufactured with four defects which are 40% and 60% OD groove representing for corrosion and
100%, 80% & 60% corresponding to hole and pitting defect. The tolerance of tube is ± 0.003” (0.076mm).

VII SENSITIVITY SETTING

The general overview of the inspected areas and its inspection results are presented in the attached colour scan reports, with the wall loss represented in colour classes as depicted in
the colour palette below.

COMMENTS / OBSERVATION:

1. IRIS was carried out on 49 tubes out of 162 tubes as per client requirement. There are 8 tubes found corrsosion with maximum wall loss of 20 % on row 30
tube 40 and row 4 tube 40. The remaining inspected tubes were in good condition with no defect. Please refer to the detailed results for more information.
