and it goes on and on.
On their way home, after collecting the leaves, the
youngest brother, Lucas, accidentally slipped from the river
shore. He fell into the river, but quickly held on to the small branch
attached to a tree.

Without even being told, Mateo held on to a bigger branch
and stretched out his body. Miguel held on to Mateo’s legs and
stretched out his body so that Lucas can hold on to his legs.
Quickly, but carefully, Lucas held on to Miguel’s legs until he was

From Philippine Folk Literature: The Legends
By Damiana L. Eugenio

Once upon a time, a hunter went to a forest with his faithful

dog. After some time, the hunter became very tired, hungry, and
thirsty. He looked everywhere but he could not find any water.
Soon, he lost consciousness.
The dog knew he had to help his master. So, he ran across
the mountain. He looked for a place where he could dig a well.

7
Soon, he found out what looked like a damp spot. The
plants in that spot grew well. The leaves on the ground were wet.
So, the dog dug with all his might. Not very long after, water filled
the hole he had dug.
The dog dipped his tail in the water. Then, he ran as fast as
he could to his master. He placed the tip of his tail in the hunter’s
mouth. Soon, the hunter opened his eyes and he sat up. Then, he
stood up and followed the dog to the mountain well. The dog
saved his master’s life.

The Turtle Who Could Not Stop Talking

Long time ago in India, a turtle lived in a pond with two swans.
The turtle loved to talk. She always had something to say. After they
lived on the pond happily for many years, a dry spell came. There
was no rain for many weeks and the pond dried up completely. The
swans realized they would have to leave their home and fly to
another pond with water.
They went to say good-bye to the turtle but she begged them

12
not to leave her. She had nothing to eat and drink. She wanted
to go with them but she could not fly.
The swans felt so sorry for their friend that at last they
thought of an idea and said to the turtle. “We have a plan. We
will hold on each end of a long stick. You must hold onto the
middle of it with your beak and never let go. You must not talk as
long as we are carrying you. If you open your mouth, you will fall
to the ground.”
The turtle promised not to say a word. The swans flew into
the air carrying the turtle on the stick between them. As they rose
above the treetops, the turtle wanted to talk but she
remembered the warning.
Soon, they passed over a small town and a few people
looked up and shouted, “Look at the swans carrying a turtle.
What a silly sight.” The turtle got angry and shouted,” Why don’t
you mind your own business?” As she shouted, she let go of the
stick and fell to the ground.
