Lesson goals:
To develop accuracy in the selected areas of form (Major- conditional clause: Type 1
and 2)
To enable the learners to use English as an L2 meaningfully and fluently
The pre task phase
Objectives:
o To prepare students to perform the activity by modeling a sample of the
desired performance (Model activity)
o Scaffold learner performance by introducing both language and content
necessary to perform the task (Non task /Strategic planning activities)
Framing the activity 1(10 minutes)
Model activity:
Teacher generated model delivery of two speeches given by a judge on extending sentence
and releasing a prisoner.
Learners observe the model on how to perform the task.
Non-task activity:
Brainstorm an event of a judge listening to a case. Discuss what type of discourse (But the
discussion is not proceeded to the level of ESP for law) that takes place and the
procedure of the event.
Strategic planning:
Guided planning: - Language focus
A written text of the teacher model is displayed on multimedia screen and the students are
shown how to use conditional clauses (all three types) and the use of model auxiliary
verbs.
During Task Phase
Objectives:
(Performance option)
o To establish language content and form delivered in the pre task phase
o To provide an opportunity to trial the accurate use of those in a
meaningful and task related activity ( Accuracy-pedagogic task)
(Process option)
o To provide the learners an opportunity for real time interaction in
discourse through simulation
o To establish the language input and enable learner’s speaking skills
(Fluency- real world task)
* (Here the students use the generated word, phrase and clause listed in the brainstorming
session in the pre task phase)
Background- Age 38, a carpenter, father of two children, a ten year old and a six
year old, wife is divorced and the children are looked after by their paternal
grandparents.
Present condition- boasts about his crime as the particular man he killed had been
a nuisance to him throughout after he had built a new house next to the house of
the one which was murdered by him.
CASE 2-
Mr. Piyal
Present condition- Pleaded guilty for murdering. Hates society, looks forward to a
social revolution.
CASE 3
Mrs. Sirimanne
Background- A thirty five year old doctor, has three children of school going age,
looked after by her mother-in-law.
Crime- poisoning her husband, who was an alcoholic. He used to abuse her
constantly. And it was also confirmed that she too had not been faithful to him.
CASE 4
Mr. Samanthan
Crime- Cut both arms of a person in a fight, drunken at the moment of the
incident, and it was for a girl that they had been disputed, He had been often
drunk and violent, he was convicted at the age of 18 for smuggling heroin.
Present status- He hates prison, regrets for his guilt, has continued the same love
affair with the girl for whom he had had the dispute.
CASE 5
Mr. Simon
Background- Age 24, married, left his wife, has a child of 4 years, comes from a
broken family, father a drug addict, motherless, the only child in his family.
Present status- Confesses and admits his guilt and says he would never do so
and says that he wanted to be a good man. Learnt carpentry and masonry in the
prison.

Mr. Keerthi
Background- age 40, a father of five children, comes from a broken family
