Developing The Schedule

This document discusses developing a project schedule by estimating activity resources and durations, establishing project start and completion times, and calculating early and late activity start and finish times to identify the critical path and determine float. Key steps include estimating resource needs and durations for each activity, setting the project estimated start and required completion dates, and calculating earliest and latest activity times to identify the critical path and any slack in the schedule.

Developing the Schedule

This chapter deals with estimating the resources and durations for all the specific activities, and
developing a detailed project schedule that determines when each activity should start and
finish.

You will become familiar with

• Estimating the resources required for each activity
• Estimating the duration for each activity
• Establishing the estimated start time and required completion time for the overall
project
• Calculating the earliest times at which each activity can start and finish, based on
the project estimated start time

• Calculating the latest times by which each activity must start and finish to com-
plete the project by its required completion time

• Determining the amount of positive or negative slack between the time each
activity can start or finish and the time it must start or finish
• Identifying the critical (longest) path of activities
• Performing the steps in the project control process
• Determining the effects of actual schedule performance on the project schedule
• Incorporating changes into the schedule
• Developing an updated project schedule
• Determining approaches to controlling the project schedule
• Implementing agile project management
Estimate Activity Resources

● The estimated resources required for an activity will influence the estimated
duration to perform the activity and the estimated cost of the activity.

● When estimating resources for activities, the availability of each resource has
to be taken into account. It is important to know what types of resources are
available, in what quantities, and during what time periods to determine if the
right types of resources will be available in sufficient quantities during the time
periods that they are needed for specific activities.

● it is necessary to estimate the types and quantities of resources required to perform

each specific activity.
● The estimated types and quantities of resources required for an activity together
● with the availability of those resources will influence the estimated duration for
● how long it will take to perform the activity.

Estimate Activity Durations

● The estimated duration for each activity must be the total elapsed time

● The estimated duration for an activity must be based on the estimated quantity of
resources required to perform the activity.
● As the project progresses, the project team can progressively elaborate the estimated
durations as more information is known or becomes clear to allow for more accurate
estimated durations.
Establish Project Start and Completion Times

● it is necessary to select a project estimated start time for when the project is expected to
begin and a project required completion time
for when the project must be done .
