SHIPS & YACHTS

NAVY & COASTGUARD
The sea is a fascinating and important environment for both people THE FREEDOM OF
and ships. Ensuring safety and freedom in coastal waters and well
beyond is one of the fundamental responsibilities and prerogatives
THE SEA
of coastal countries.
This gives rise to a range of different missions for the navy and coast-
guards, which place the highest expectations on crew, functionality
on board, performance and technology. The design of A&R ships
never compromises on these requisites, regardless of the waters
and circumstances in which the vessel is navigating. 02

Long-term sustainability 03
For the past hundred years, A&R have consistently demonstrated
their expertise with minesweeping vessels and patrol boats, which
are always ahead of their time in terms of functionality, technology
and cost-efficiency. In fact, these vessels are so advanced that
they will still be state-of-the-art in several years' time. A service
life of well over 30 years is testimony to the high quality of our
vessels and the satisfaction among those who operate them.

SWATH One important feature of the SWATH@A&R technology is the possibility

to design ships around a modular concept, thereby fitting the ships with
MODULAR equipment for a diverse range of different capabilities: weapons for patrol
TECHNOLOGY boats, sonar technology for minesweepers or hydrographic research, diving
PROGRESS STEP BY STEP equipment or medical devices.
The lightweight aluminium modules, which are positioned on the bow of
SWATH vessels between the two hulls, work on the plug & play principle:
they can be connected to electricity or water supplies on board in no time
at all, and can be latched on or off and exchanged equally as quickly. The
ship therefore stays the same – just the equipment on board changes. And
this can be performed easily, because the logistics, crane and lorry neces-
sary are available in every port. This cost-efficient concept saves time and
ensures sustainability.

MINESWEEPING Every one unique: A&R navy vessels vary considerably depending on
their usage and field of application. Besides their traditional grey colour,
DRIVEN BY however, they all share one thing in common: the A&R philosophy of
INNOVATION building top quality ships, within the specified time and budget. For
instance, over 400 A&R minesweepers (MCMV) have proved that it
is always possible to find new solutions to counteract the rapid ad-
vancement in mine technologies – solutions that ensure maximum
effectiveness and minimum risk for personnel. This can be seen in
the use of non-magnetic steel (NMST), which has long proved to be
the best construction material for MCMVs due to its magnetic and 06
acoustic properties, as well as its shock resistance. —

Developed in Germany
In a close and constructive partnership with the German Navy and
the purchasing and testing departments of the BAAINBw (part of the
MoD), A&R has spent many years driving forward developments in
shipbuilding and ship technology. A&R have drawn on their research
and technology resources to develop their own solutions, particularly
in the domain of shock resistance and underwater acoustics.

The achievements and experience gained during this period have built
up a knowledge base that enables A&R to deal with all conventional
processes and standards, including those of NATO. Traditional German
expertise – recognized all over the world and based on engineering
skills, inventive talent, dedication to quality and reliability – provides
a solid base to ensure strict observation of deadlines, efficient trans-
actions, quick provision of necessary documents, and steadfast yet
flexible project management.
The navy and coastguards are placing increasing importance OFFSHORE PATROL
on cost-efficiency during the purchase and operations of their
vessels. The costly spiral of technology implicated in the con-
AT HOME IN ALL WATERS
struction of modern navy ships implies that budgets no longer
allow these vessels to be used for simple surveillance and training
missions. A&R manage to reduce these antipodes to a common
denominator with their experience and high degree of flexibility.
Every one of the high-performance A&R ships is customised pre-
cisely for the mission(s) to which it will be assigned. Seakeeping
performance, design and fittings, as well as extra features – such 08
as a helicopter landing pad on board – are second to none. The —
tried-and-trusted 66 m coastal vessels have been optimised 09
and enlarged. The A&R portfolio now includes fully elaborated
concepts for navy and coastguard vessels.
SWATH@A&R Coast guarding and minesweeping are two extremely dangerous
yet high-tech fields. A&R vessels ensure first-class performance
TECHNOLOGY in terms of quality, functionality and efficiency. They keep water-
ELEMENTARY BENEFITS ways protected, detect and eliminate sea mines. Alongside the
specialist monohull vessels, A&R have managed to establish a new,
key technology that has become highly recognized around the world:
the Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull.

DOUBLED UP FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE

The twin hull technology has a radical impact on the vessel's
appearance, structure and performance at sea. In contrast to
a monohull, a SWATH does not get its buoyancy from surface
displacement hulls. It is designed with two torpedo-shaped un- 02
derwater hulls, which support the platform of the ship on struts. —
This means that SWATH@A&R vessels have significantly less con- 03
tact surface for waves, which, in turn significantly reduces the roll-
ing and pitching on board – by 75 % compared to a conventional
monohull boat. As a rule, it can be said that the smaller the boat,
the greater the difference between a SWATH and a monohull. For
instance, a monohull would need to be 80 metres long to achieve the
same performance at sea as a 25 metres SWATH. SWATH technology
increases the cost-efficiency, safety and even speed, because a
SWATH vessel will not be slowed forced to slow down by extreme
swell.

On the whole, SWATH@A&R technology is a revolution, in terms

of construction costs, comfort, boarding and functionality. A large
number of SWATH@A&R vessels are in operation on the seas –
very successfully and very calmly, whatever the conditions are.
The services provided for outstanding ships should be of an equally A&R SERVICES
outstanding standard. This is a conviction that A&R carries through
QUICKLY ON SITE –
in practice by providing all kinds of different services – including the
inconceivable – in the fields of servicing, maintenance, repairs and ANYWHERE
refitting.

Furthermore, the shipyard at Lemwerder not only benefits from all the
necessary infrastructure, but all the necessary specialists are on site,
too. All experts bring extensive experience and flexibility with them, 12
allowing them to travel to ships almost anywhere in the world to carry —
out quick repairs and maintenance. 13

PERFECTION WITH A CAPITAL P

Alongside support in person, A&R also provides virtual support. The
innovative software system Virtual Ship Explorer (VSE) integrates all
relevant data and functions to manage and carry out maintenance
on a ship – either on board or from land. This also includes the
management and documentation of spare parts – also available via a
pre-defined data network.
THE BEST OF The rich past of A&R is strongly tied to the navy. Shortly after the
shipyard was founded in 1907, founders Georg Abeking and Henry
BOTH WORLDS
Rasmussen began designing and building their first boats for the
navy and coastguards. At the same time, they also created renowned
sailing and motor yachts. Since then, both the naval and leisure
sectors have driven each other forwards with their very different
requirements in terms of function and design. A multitude of high-tech
developments for the navy are a natural addition to the yacht-building
division today. On the other hand, SWATH@A&R technology – 14
originally a feat from the civilian domain – has now become next- —
generation technology for the navy. Despite all the commitment to 15
drive forward change and improvement, one factor remains constant
at A&R: the personal, very close and constructive relationships with
our customers throughout the world.
