Linear Algebra (for IEM) 2021/22

Prof. Dr. Stephan Trenn

Stefanos van Dijk

Exercise sheet 7
In-class-exercise T21
Let s1 , v1 , s2 , v2 be fixed, three-dimentional vectors. Consider two lines Li = {si + αvi : α ∈ R} for
i = 1, 2. Assume that the vectors have been chosen in such a way that the lines are non-parallel
and don’t intersect.

a) Give a general procedure to obtain pi ∈ Li such that ∥p1 − p2 ∥ = dist(L1 , L2 ) where the
distance between lines is defined to be the smallest distance between all pairs of points on
the lines.
b) Apply your method to the lines obtained by

In-class-exercise T22
Consider the matrix A  

−2 1 2 −2
 
 2 0 −1 2
−2 0 2 −1

a) Verify that λ1 = 1, λ2 = −1 are eigenvalues of A.

b) What are the geometric and algebraic multiplicities of λ1 , λ2 .
c) Are there any other eigenvalues?

d) There is a theorem that states that the trace of a matrix equals the sum of its eigenvalues
up to multiplicity. Verify that this is indeed the case for A.

The remaining time of the tutorial can be used to discuss the Sowiso-exercises of Lecture 13 and
Homework 2.

Each of the inclass-exercises are supposed to be solved during the tutorials within about 30 minutes. This can be
done in groups of up to four students and the TA will assist you in finding a solution. Afterwards the solution will
be presented by one student, the TA will moderate this presentation and the following discussion.
Attention: Each student has to present at least one solution (also possible in the computer tutorials) during the
8 weeks of the course. You can prepare the inclass-exercise also before the tutorial and contact the TA if you want
to present the solution.
