FIBER OPTIC SECURITY SOLUTIONS

WEVE TURNED THE TABLES ON I N T R U D E R S

The Fiber Fence Security Solution
In the forefront of fiber optics solutions since 1985, FIS is leading the way again with the answer to todays urgent need for improved security. Weve taken fiber optic technology to a new level with an innovative, effective, yet affordable long-distance security system that provides a higher level of protection for you.

Why is Fiber Fence Effective?

Fiber Fence monitors and protects your perimeter or defined border through an infrared detection system that uses fiber optic cable as the waveguide sensor. The system integrates a length of weather-protected fiber optic cable along the complete fencing perimeter. Using the latest OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) technology, the condition of the fiber cable is monitored continuously with any breaks or changes in tension recognized immediately due to the change in light transmission these events cause. An alarm is signaled and the exact location of the event is pinpointed. This long-distance sensing capability has been made practical by the development of FISs specially designed mechanical Mouse Trip. A single control unit can protect up to 80 kilometers of perimeter and units can be cascaded for virtually unlimited distances. The cable is even easy to place around corners and under obstacles. Unlike copper systems, it is impossible to jumper fiber cable since its 9m core requires precise alignment for light transmission. Fiber is EMIimmune, and electronically noise-free and undetectable. The combination of our fiber optic cable, special fiber optic cameras and other accessories makes your Fiber Fence installation a complete, cost-effective, state-of-the-art security solution. Whats more, if you need special features added to your system, FIS can help customize the installation to meet your security requirements

Who Should have the Fiber Fence ?

Our Fiber Fence system is ideally suited for a wide range of security applications: Airports Prisons Nuclear Power Facilities Border Security Utilities Military Bases Museums and Galleries Monuments and Historic Landmarks Water Treatment Plants Government Facilities Pipelines Railroad Tracks Construction Sites Animal Fencing Research & Scientific Laboratories Bridges Stadiums Estates Temporary Security Sites

Watching Your Perimeter

Our Fiber Fence 1000 system is a dependable, cost-effective way of using fiber optic technology to continuously monitor and secure your perimeter. A single control unit is located at a specified indoor location, with only the weatherprotected fiber optic cable exposed to the elements. When a break in the cable is detected, an alarm is triggered instantaneously. Because the control unit measures the distance (in meters) to the break, you are able to identify the point of intrusion within one minute or less. The fiber optic waveguide sensing technology used in the 1000 results in a cost-effective security system providing a sensing range of 7 kilometers. Low cost of installation and maintenance along with fewer false alarms allow better protection for your facility at a minimal investment. The Fiber Fence 1000 comes in a table-top design but can easily be mounted in a 19-inch rack (as shown on page 5) with customized accessories. You can increase the sensitivity of your installation by adding our Mouse Trip feature which detects tugs and pulls on the fiber as well as breaks.

Long-Distance Sophistication
The Fiber Fence 2000 is a sophisticated security system that can monitor up to 80 kilometers of perimeter. A fully-operational OTDR is contained within the system, along with a wide variety of features and options. Installation of the sensing cable on the 2000 is easy since the cable does not have to be looped back to the main control unit. Built-in trace storage capability with a trace overlay feature allows for quick and accurate before-and-after comparison of the fibers characteristics. This is especially important when harmless intrusions or environmental events, such as an ice storm, occur around the perimeter. A printable event chart records the frequency and location of events. A major advantage of the Fiber Fence 2000 is the extended distance over which it can monitor a cables condition. This is because the OTDR is capable of detecting intrusions or breaks in the cable beyond the first event seeing through many Mouse Trips. The computer-based 2000 can graphically display a custom area map (map view) of your perimeter with each location of your Mouse Trips. Specially designed software works with the security system so that when triggered, the Mouse Trips set off an alarm and start blinking on your map view display. Options available for the 2000 include upgraded software packages, modem dial-up, exterior large-alarm capability, remote disable with card access, and Ethernet.

Small Perimeter Applications

When the perimeter of the area (fence) is in full view, it is not necessary to determine the location of the break. Upon activation, our automatic dial up accessory will alert any desired remote headquarters. You may also incorporate site cameras that are controlled and viewed from the same remote location. The Fiber Fence 100 is also a highly-affordable perimeter sensor for long distances with a monitoring range of up to 75 kilometers. The 100 is designed to work as a sensor and can be integrated into an existing security system. Sensitivity is easily adjusted on the back of the control unit, to meet situational needs. Like the 1000, a simple tug or break in the fiber sets off the relay within the control unit. The system has its own alarm and relay output, which can be hooked into a control panel. It can be set up to signal the control panel and indicate an intrusion on your alarm panel. Networking the system to trigger exterior lighting and outside alarms are further options. Like the 1000 and 2000 systems, the 100 is easy to install and maintain.

Fiber Webb
The newest addition to the Fiber Fence line is, quite literally, a Fiber Fence. The new system, known as Fiber Webb, consists of a woven multimode fiber that can be attached to an existing fence or used as a stand-alone physical barrier. The Fiber Webb uses a control unit that is similar to the Fiber Fence 100; light is injected into one end of the netting, and is monitored at the other end. Any attempt to climb the netting, lift up the netting, cut through it, or stretch it apart will attenuate the light in the fiber and set off the alarm.

Increased Sensitivity and Reliability

Less intrusive activity on your perimeter fencing can be detected with the installation of one or more of FISs patent pending Mouse Trips. Designed by our own engineers, this device simulates a break in the fiber when even a small amount of force is applied. As little as 5 ounces of pull activates its spring-loaded mechanism, imitating a break and instantaneously setting off the alarm. The Mouse Trip has a number of sophisticated features that make it both dependable and economical. For example, the amount of force (pull) on the fiber required to set off the system is adjustable, helping to reduce false alarms. Fully tamper-resistant housing is engineered to trigger the alarm when the lid is removed for any reason. And each Mouse Trip houses 2-3 meters of spare fiber for restoration purposes. When a mechanical or fusion splice repair is performed between two Mouse Trips, the protection sleeves and splice itself are also housed in the Trip. Each Mouse Trip receives a distance location sticker along with a Fiber Optic Perimeter Security Warning Sign. Injection-molding production makes the Mouse Trip affordable while sealing and protecting it against the elements. Durability and corrosionresistance are further ensured by all stainless steel or plastic components. In most installations, Mouse Trips are mounted 10 meters apart however the distance can vary depending on the sensitivity required. The units can be mounted on the fence as well as on buildings or post extensions. Post extensions act as spacers, allowing the cable to be mounted away from the fence when desired. Each unit has space in which slack cable can be stored to facilitate adjustments in the tightness of the cable.

MOUSE TRIP
Mouse Trip Includes Tamper-proof Cover Location Identification Sticker Fiber Optic Security Warning Sign Installed directly on the fence, with the fiber Splice Enclosure attached inside the enclosure. A slight pull (laterally or vertically) will trip the Mouse, which Spare Fiber Storage
puts a bend in the fiber that the Fiber Fence Security System can see. The control units alarm activates and the distance to that Mouse Trip is displayed on the LCD. A specialized mechanical device that detects an unusual event - such as a tug or pull - along the fiber optic cable even though the event doesnt actually break the fiber. It increases the sensitivity and reliability of the overall system by providing added protection against the unforeseen.

Hard anchors are Mouse Trips without the internal components. They can be mounted at corners, on buildings and gates, or at any point in the perimeter area where an anchor is needed. Like the Mouse Trip, this anchor surface provides affixed distance location and warning label.

LE B A Sensing Cable C
Designed to signal attenuation (decrease in energy transmission due to the loss of light) from an intrusion or other unusual event, our fiber optic dielectric sensing cable is engineered specifically for Fiber Fence Security Systems. The cable is pliable enough to withstand installation yet calculated to break when tension reaches a specified level. Besides a lower bend radius, this cable is more sensitive than standard fiber optic cable. The unique jacket is constructed of formulated PVC and is UV-resistant. It is also water resistant and weatherproof, making it capable of withstanding elements such as ice, sleet, snow and heavy winds. It is non-corrosive, further enhancing its ability to endure over time. This 900m cable is tested to perform at temperatures ranging from 40 to +40 degrees Centigrade. The jacket comes in an inconspicuous gray, but is available in many colors upon request.

SOFT ANCHORS & SPACERS

Composite Cable
Contains fiber sub units for camera data transmission and copper wire for camera powering. Jacket construction is formulated PVC and U.V. resistant.

A soft anchor is an easy to use durable tie wrap used to secure the fiber mounted on the fence and reinforce its position.

The spacer is a 4-inch adjustable eyebolt for reinforcement of the fiber. It is mounted to the fence pole or fence mesh and sits 2 inches from the fencing. This position enhances the stability of the fiber and helps prevent climbing over or scaling the perimeter. This product is also available in different lengths if needed.

N System vs. Sensor

The capabilities of the Fiber Fence make it a powerful deterrent to intrusion whether acting as its own system or as one of several sensing mechanisms integrated into a broader security installation. As the System or Control Unit When the Fiber Fence serves as its own system all devices along the fiber optic cable will trigger an alarm in the Fiber Fence control unit. This is ideal for applications where operators are on duty to monitor the alarm status. As a Sensor Because the Fiber Fence is compatible with all common security products, it can be tied into a broader central control panel or security system to enhance that system's effectiveness. This is particularly well-suited for situations where perimeter protection isn't the only concern or for remote applications.

Design Examples
Example 1 Simplest design with a square perimeter and one remote gate. One hard anchor and one Mouse Trip at each corner. Gate Gard and one set of magnetic contacts at the gate. The Fiber Fence fiber is spliced to an outdoor-rated cable and buried under the gate. Example 2 Similar to Example 1, with the addition of two inside corners. One hard anchor and one Mouse Trip at each corner. Example 3 A building is located mid-span on the fence line, and a dual-door gate replaces the single gate.In order to bypass the building, the fiber can be: Spliced to an outdoor cable and buried around the building. Attached directly to the wall of the building. The Gate Gard is used the same way as in example 1; a pair of magnetic contacts is attached to the gate where the two panels come together in the center, and the fiber is buried under the gate. Example 4 Fiber Fence fiber and Mouse Trips can be mounted anywhere on the fence the user desires; FIS recommends halfway up from the ground and on post extensions that place the fiber and Mouse Trips into the barbed wire section of the fence.
