Bullying
Bullying is the use of violence, threat, or force to intimidate others. This behavior can be
a habit and involve an imbalance of social and physical power. This behavior can
include verbal abuse or threats, physical violence or force, and can be directed
repeatedly against a certain victim. It maybe based on race, religion, gender, sexuality,
or ability. Bullying in educational settings remains a commonplace everyday experience.
Bullying among students is very dangerous. It can affect not only the students who get
bullied but also the bullies, the witness of bullying, and the school itself as an
educational institution.
The children and teenagers who get bullied might experience several mental problems,
such as depression, anxiety, increased sadness and loneliness, sleeping trouble, and
loss of interest in particular activities they used to enjoy. These problems may be
carried away until they grow to be an adult. Besides, physical violence in bullying can
lead to physical injuries. In heavy cases, bullying can trigger a fatal act, such as suicide.
The victims will find acts of bullying difficult to forget, and there is insecurity right in the
school environment. And in the quite rare case, the victims of bullying will probably
show the nature of violence.
The academic achievements of the victims will also get an impact. A UCLA study of
2.300 students in eleven middle schools in Los Angeles found that a high level of
bullying was associated with lower grades across three years of middle school.
Students who were rated as the most bullied performed significantly worse academically
than their peers. According to research, when they are growing into an adult, children
who act bullying have a big tendency to behave roughly, do criminality, be engaged in
vandalism, consume drugs and alcohol, and be engaged in free intercourse. In addition,
sixty percent of boys who bully their friends in primary school or junior high school have
been convicted at least once over a crime at the age of 24 years.
Ultimately, the school, where the act of bullying happens also can get the impact. It
makes the students feel insecure and creates a non-conducive school environment,
which leads to ineffective teaching and learning activities. Furthermore, it makes
morality education and the spirit of learning at the school need to be questioned.
Based on several facts above, it is obvious that bullying among students is very
dangerous. It can cause physical and mental health problems, a quality decline in
academic performance due to ineffective teaching and learning activities, and makes
people doubt the role of the school in educating the student
