Related to Civil Engineering
Quantities.
Quantities, Estimation & Bill of Quantities (BQ)
QUANTITIES
Estimated Labor and materials required to carry
out the project under various items of work.
ESTIMATION
The process of finding an estimate, or
DEFINITION approximation, which is a value that is usable
for some purpose even if input data may be
incomplete, uncertain, or unstable.

BILL OF QUANTITIES
Consist of a schedule of the items of work to be
carried out under the contract with quantities and
unit cost rate entered against each item.
5
OTHER DEFINITIONS

TAKING-OFF
1
Process of Measuring from drawings and recording all
dimensions in recognized form on a special ruled paper
known as “Dimension Paper’ or ‘Taking-off Sheet’

SQUARING DIMENSION
2
Process of multiplication and/ or addition/
substraction of recorded dimension for the purposes
of obtaining the linear, square or cubic measurements.
OTHER DEFINITIONS
ABTRACTING OR WORKING UP
3 Process of collecting the measurements of identical
character and description, under different tracks and
reducing them to units as required by CESMM
TRADE
Work or practice of certain craft. Example:
Bricklayer, Plumber, Concreter, Carpenter etc. 4

CONDITION OF CONTRACT
5 Defines the terms under which the work is to be undertaken, the
relationship between the Promoter or employer, the engineer and
the contractor, the powers of the engineer and the term of payment.
OTHER DEFINITIONS
SPECIFICATION
6 Implies the information given in the Contract Drawings
and the Bill of Quantities. Describe in detail the work to be
executed under the contract and the nature and quality of
material and workmanship.

CONTRACT DRAWING
Despite the nature and scope of the work to be
carried out under the contract. They must be
prepared to a suitable scale and be insufficient to 7
permit a contractor to price the Bill of Quantities
and to carried out the work satisfactorily.
PROVISIONAL SUM
8 For work which cannot be described and given in items
which follows the measurement rules.
A sum provided for works or for the cost, which cannot
be entirely foreseen, defined or detailed at the time
tendering documents is issued.

PRIME COST
A sum provided for work or services to be executed by
the Nominated Sub-Contractor (NSC) for materials or
9 goods to be obtained from Nominated Supplier (NS)
Such sum shall be estimated to be exclusive of any profit
required by general contractor and provision shall be
made for the addition thereof.

Method of Measurement of Building
Works (SMMM) and Malaysian Civil

MyCESMM
MyCESMM has been prepared
by the following concept:

▪ User Friendly and familiarity

with local context
▪ Flexibility to suit various types
of civil Engineering Works
▪ Relevant and acceptable to
the industry practice
MyCESMM Advantages
With one standard method of measurement to be referred – the
industry will having ‘one language’ while improving the communication.
Better suit to local condition and method or working on site provides
measurement convention.
Less disputes since the scope of works and measurement method are
clearly defined.

Computerization can be done with standard phraseology and coding

Cost be better managed as it provides compilation of data and be used

as cost control tool.
