1. A 440 V shunt is driving a fan at 1500 rpm drawing 40 A current from the supply. The armature
and field resistances of the motor are 0.4 Ω and 200 Ω respectively.
a. Suppose an external armature resistance of value 5 Ω is inserted in the armature circuit.
Calculate the newly achieved speed and the armature current.
b. Find the speed at which the machine must be driven at so that the rated performance can
be obtained as a generator.

2. A 240 V DC series motor has armature and field resistances of 0.2 Ω and 0.10 Ω respectively.
It takes a current of 30 A from the supply while running at 1000 rpm. Assume the load torque
remains constant.
a. What will the new steady state armature current and the speed be, if an external resistance
of 2 Ω is inserted in series with the motor?
b. Suppose a diverter resistance of 0.4 Ω is connected across the field coil of the motor.
Calculate the newly attained steady state armature current and speed of the machine.

3. A shunt motor is supplied by a DC voltage of 600V. The machine does have an efficiency of
80%. When operating on a hoist, an efficiency of 75% of attained. Determine the amount of
current drawn from the supply when the hoist raises a load of 450 kg at a speed of 3 m/s.
Suppose rheostat braking is used to break the motor. What should be the value of the external
resistance that must be put in series with the armature circuit in order to lower the same load at
the same speed?

4. A series DC motor is being supplied by a single-phase semi convertor is suppling as shown in

the following figure. The rms value of the AC voltage feeding the convertor circuit is 240V at
a frequency of 50Hz.The armature and field resistance of the motor ae 0.5 Ω and 2 Ω
respectively. The flux constant is 50 and the voltage constant is 60. Suppose the load torque is
30 Nm. Neglect any losses that may be incurred in the conduction. Calculate the value of
average current and the speed for a firing angle α = 60˚.

5. The speed of a 20 hp, 300 v ,1800 rpm separately excited DC motor is controlled by a three-
phase full convertor drive. The field current is also controlled by a three-phase full convertor
and is set to the maximum possible vale. The AC input is three-phase, Y connected, 208V,
60 HZ supply. The armature resistance is 𝑅𝑎 = =0.25 ohm, the field resistance is 𝑅𝑓 = = 245
ohm, and the motor voltage constant is 𝐾𝑣 = 1.2 v/A rad/sec. The armature and field currents

can be assumed to be continuous and ripple free. The viscous friction and any losses are
assumed to be negligible.
a) Determine the delay angle of the armature convertor 𝛼, if the motor supplies rated
power at the rated speed
b) The no- load speed if the delay angles is the same as in (a) and the armature current at
no-load is 10% of the rated value.
6. In the microcomputer-controlled IGBT transistor DC chopper shown in the following figure,
the input voltage Vd = 260 V, the load is a separately excited DC motor with Ra= 0.28 Ω and
La= 30 mH. The motor’s speed is to be controlled over a range 0-2500 rpm, provided that the
load torque is kept constant and requires an armature current of 30 A.
a) Calculate the range of the duty cycle, D required if the motor design constant KeΦ
has a value of 0.10 V/rpm.
b) Find the speed of the motor n (rpm) when the chopper is switched fully ON such
that the duty cycle D = 1.0.
