where ✏0 is the permittivity of the air. Find D due to E = E0 (1, 1, 1) (V/m). By the way,
do you know (or could you guess) the unit of the electric flux density D? If you do, please
specify it (3 points).

Problem 2 (15 pts)
(Gauss’s law and electric potential) Let’s suppose the total charge of Q distributes uniformly
in the sphere of radius of R. The spherical shell has its center at the origin.
(a) What is the volume charge density ⇢v in the sphere? Express it as the function of Q
and R.
(b) Apply the Gauss’s law to find the electric field E. Draw Er in the following plot,
where r denotes the distance of the observation point from the origin. In the plot, specify
the values of the electric field at r = R.

(c) Find the electric potential V in the space. Draw V (r) in the following plot, where r
denotes the distance of the observation point from the origin. In the plot, specify the values
of the electric potential at r = R.

Problem 3 (15 pts)
(Capacitance) The following figure represents the cross section of a spherical capacitor, con-
sisted of two conducting shells of r = a and r = c. Determine its capacitance. (a, b, c, ✏r1 , ✏r2 )=(1

(Electrostatic energy and force) An air-filled parallel plate capacitor of length L, width a,
and plate separation d was charged with charge Q0 (= ✏0 LaV0 /d) by the voltage source V0 ,
and disconnected from the voltage source. Then, it is partially filled with a dielectric medium
of dielectric constant ✏r , as shown in the following figure. In reality, electric field extends the
area of overlap between two plates, and is called the fringe e↵ects. To simplify the problem,
we ignore the fringe fields in this problem.

(a) With the voltage source disconnected, which of the following will remain constant
regardless of the insertion of the dielectric medium, the voltage across the capacitor or the
charge stored in the capacitor?
(b) Find the electrically stored energy in the system when the dielectric medium overlaps
with the plates by the distance x. Express it with the parameters given in the problem.
(c) You may find in (b) that the electrically stored energy is the function of the distance
x. From the principle of virtual displacement, this implies that the system should apply a
force to the dielectric in a direction to reduce the electrically stored (potential) energy. Find
the force F .

(a) State the boundary condition that electric field should satisfy on the surface of the
conducting plane.
(b) The presence of the positive Q will induce negative charges on the conducting planes.
Determine the force on Q caused by the charges induced on the planes.
