Punnett Square Worksheet 1
I. Directions: Read each problem carefully. Make a “key” for the trait, identify the parents involved in the
cross and the possible offspring each parents produces. Show the Punnett square and give the
probability of both genotype and phenotype.

( Example) In rabbits, black fur is dominant over white fur. Show the cross of a
heterozygous black male with a homozygous white female.
b b
Key: Black fur = B, White fur = b
B Bb Bb
Parents: Bb, bb (male –black fur, female-white fur)

Offspring: 2 Bb, 2bb (2 black fur, 2 white fur) b

bb bb
Genotype Probability: 50% heterozygous black
50% homozygous white

Phenotype Probability: 50% white fur, 50% black fur

1. Tall is dominant over short in pea plants. Show the cross when a homozygous short plant is crossed
with a homozygous tall plant.

Key: Short plant = t , Tall plant=T t t

Parents: TT x tt T
Tt Tt
Offspring: 4 Tt

Genotype Probability: 100% homozygous tall T Tt Tt

Phenotype Probability: 100% of the offspring’s will be tall / 0% short

2. In humans, free-ear lobes are dominant to attached. Two parents that are both heterozygous free are
expecting a child. What are the chances that the child will have free ear lobes or attached?
Key: free ear lobes = F , attached ear lobes = f F f

Parents: Ff x Ff FF Ff
F
Offspring: 1FF , 2Ff,1 ff

Genotype Probability:25% homo free 50% heter free 25%homo attached f Ff ff

Phenotype Probability: 75% free 25% attached

3. Wrinkled seed are recessive to smooth seeds. Show a plant that always produces wrinkled seeds crossed
with a heterozygous smooth seeds producing plant.
Key: W= smooth w= wrinkled w w

Parents: Ww x Ww
Ww Ww
W
Offspring: 2Ww, 2ww
ww ww
Genotype Probability:50% heterozygous smooth,50% homozygous wrinkled w

Phenotype Probability: 50% heterozygous smooth 50% homozygous wrinkled

4. As in the previous problem… Show a heterozygous smooth plant crossed with another heterozygous
smooth seed producing plant. W w

Key: W= smooth w= wrinkled

W WW Ww
Parents: ww x Ww
Ww ww
Offspring: 3Ww,1 ww w

Genotype Probability: 25% homo smooth 50% heter smooth 25% wrinkled

Phenotype Probability: 75% smooth 25% wrinkled

5. Blue eyes are dominant to red eyes in rabbits. Show a heterozygous blue-eyed rabbit crossed with a red-
eyed rabbit.

Key: B=blue b=red B b

Parents: Bb x bb Bb bb
b
Offspring: 2Bb, 2bb

Genotype Probability: 50% heter blue 50% homo red b Bb bb

Phenotype Probability: 50% heterozygous blue 50% homozygous red

II. Complete the following monohybrid crosses: draw a Punnett square, list the ratio and describe
the offspring. Be sure to remember that the capital letter is dominant.

Example)
A green pea plant (GG) is being crossed with a green pea plant (Gg).

G G

Genotype= 2 GG: 2 Gg ; 0 gg
G
GG GG

g Gg Gg Phenotype = 4 Green pea plants: 0 other color

1) A green pea plant (Gg) is crossed with a yellow pea plant (gg).

Gg Green 1:2 / gg yellow 1:2 G g

Gg gg
g
g Gg gg

A tall plant (TT) is crossed with a tall plant (Tt).

2)
TT tall 1:2 / Tt tall 1:2 T T
TT TT
T
t Tt Tt

3) A tall plant (Tt) is crossed with a short plant (tt).

Tt tall 1:2 / tt short 1:2 T t
Tt tt
t
4) A red flower (Rr) is crossed with a white flower (rr). t Tt tt

Rr red flower 1:2 / rr white flower 1:2 R r

Rr rr
r
r Rr rr

5) A white flower (rr) is crossed with a white flower (rr).

rr white flower 4:4 100% r r
rr rrr

r rr rr
6) A black chicken (BB) is crossed with a black chicken (BB).

BB black chicken 4:4 100% B B
