Sterilization and Sanitation of Nail Care Tools and Equipment

Cleaning is the first and most important phase toward preventing the transmission
of contagious bacteria in the living space. Before direct contact with clients and any
nail care activity begins, all tools, implements, equipment, or other kits must be
properly cleaned, disinfected and all necessary items sterilized.
Sanitation is the lowest level of decontamination and can reduce some germs on the
surface, but won't kill all organisms. Sanitary conditions are measures taken to push
public health and stop the spread of infectious diseases. Compliance with safety
rules within the salon industry is typically very helpful in preventing accidents and
injury to people within the salon. The term, sanitation is most typically wont to clean
hands. Hand washing is a good practice to remove bacteria and avoid infection from
moving from one person to another. Hand washing is like a “do-it-yourself” vaccine.
This is the best way to prevent infections and diseases.
Five Simple and Effective Steps of Handwashing:

1. Wet your hands with clean tap water and scrub with soap.
2. Lather hands together to produce lather, and scrub all surfaces.
3. Scrub all surfaces and rub your hands for 15-20 seconds.
4. Rinse hands well under running water.
5. Dry hands using a paper towel or air dryer.
The basic rule of the hospital is to clean hands or clean hands with alcohol-based
hand wipes before and after each patient contact. The same happens to salons,
beauticians, and their clients.
What is Sanitization? What's meant by Sterilization?

Sanitization is the process of destroying some, but not all micro-organisms.
Sanitation is another word for cleaning this is a process of washing, cleaning, or
removing dirt, and eliminates dust, debris, and germs on the surface.
Finger bowls, Foot Spa Basin, hand and foot spa machines must be sanitized.
Sterilization is the process of destroying all living microorganisms. Salons use
sterilization of metal tools and instruments. Metal tools must be properly sterilized.
METHODS OF STERILIZATION
There are five sterilization methods that you should know:

1. Moist Heat
 Boiling in the water at 212 degrees Fahrenheit or 100 degrees
Centigrade.
 Steaming is an airtight chamber.
2. Dry Heat
 Baking a method of sterilization rarely used in beauty shops, but
employed in hospitals.
3. Ultra Violet Rays
 Articles may be sterilized by exposing them to ultra-violet rays in an
enclosed cabinet.
4. Vapors (fumigation)
 Fumigants in a closed cabinet are used to maintain the sterility of
sterile items.
5. Antiseptics and Disinfectants: Effective Chemical Agents
 Mixing a disinfectant with water and immersing the article in the
solution is the most practical method of sterilization in salons.
The sterilization and cleaning methods employed in the salon include the
application of environmental conditions such as heat and radiation; and substances
such as antiseptics and steam fumigants.
To avoid the transmission of disease-producing pathogens, proper hygiene
and sterilization procedures must be practiced for your health and also for the
safety of your customers.
What is the difference between a disinfectant and an antiseptic??
Cleaning is a necessary part of disinfection. Organic substances can inactivate

many disinfectants. Cleaning reduces the soil load and makes the disinfectant
work.
A disinfectant may be substances that cannot control microorganisms on non-

biological surfaces such as tools, equipment, furniture, and fixtures. Disinfectants
are chemical agents that kill infected devices or organisms on the surface that are
used to remove bacteria on equipment and tools but may not be used on the skin. In
the salon area, the disinfectant must be able to destroy viruses, fungi, and hazardous
bacteria.
Tabletops and door handles are wiped with disinfectant and the floor should
be mopped with disinfectant as well.
Bleach will be used as a good disinfectant, it should be used with caution because
it can release toxic fumes when mixed with certain substances. Bleach often used
for laundry towels, and another laundry within the salon.
Disinfection may be a procedure that involves physical or chemical methods to

destroy certain microorganisms, viruses, or fungi
An antiseptic is an agent that prevents the multiplication of micro-organisms

because it is milder than a disinfectant, it is often used directly on the skin.
