ASSIGNMENT
LO4. Examine the need for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and its role
within the workplace and for higher-level learning.
I. Discuss the importance of CPD and its contribution to own learning
1. What is CPD?
- Continuing Professional Development is a commitment to ongoing lifelong learning.
CPD encourages looking forward and identifying opportunities to learn something new,
refresh existing knowledge, improve skills, or simply keep up-to-date with the latest
developments within a particular profession or industry.
- In practice, CPD can mean everything from taking a training course or attending an
educational event to studying for new qualifications or learning new aspects of a job and
professionalism.
- Continuing Professional Development enables learning to become conscious and
proactive, rather than passive and reactive. It involves an individual documenting and
keeping a record of the increasing skills, knowledge, and experience they gain throughout
their career.
- CPD combines different methodologies to learning, which includes training courses,
seminars, workshops, conferences and events, webinars, and online eLearning programs.
CPD can also include sharing best practice techniques, thoughts, and ideas, all focused on
an individual improving within the work environment. (Johnston, 2019)
2. Why does CPD exist?
- Albert Einstein said, ‘Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind
to think’ – and this is certainly true when it comes to the existence of CPD. Ensuring that
your skills and abilities are enhanced and expanded upon beyond formal education will
permit proficiency and efficiency within your skillset.
- CPD takes the learning process one step further by ensuring that both the way you learn
and the material you learn is organized, applicable, and pertinent. You will probably have
finished your academic requirements when you begin working in a particular industry in
a new capacity. CPD advances your learning and gives you the chance to concentrate on
any particular information and skills - typically for a brief period.
- You'll be more certain that your skill set and expertise will increase if you concentrate
on these skills for, say, a year. Therefore, you can ensure that your professional
advancement is secure by, for example, focusing on the skills of the future. (Fran, 2021)
4. Developing strengths
Use your strengths
- Get Additional Training: Once we graduate from school, we generally don’t revisit core
subjects — especially if we were good at them. But times change and business evolves. If
you want your strengths to stay strong, take some additional coursework or solicit a
mentor who can help you take things to the next level.
- Identify Strength-Enhancing Opportunities: Practicing humility and recognizing that
you can improve in certain areas is key. Constantly challenge yourself to get better and
look for those opportunities to sharpen your skills.
- Deliberately Practice: If you’re good at something, nothing makes that skill better than
deliberate practice. The deliberate practice focuses on the quality of your practice, not
necessarily the quantity, and in some cases, practicing “more” can be counterproductive
to your goals. I make sure that when I practice at a core competency, I do it to the best of
my ability and never practice trivially.
- Learn From Others: I like to observe other people who have similar strengths to my
own. As an innate problem-solver, I’ve become better at my job by watching how other
people approach their work and learning from their experiences. I’m then able to adapt
what I’ve learned and take my approach to the situation.
- Focus on the Positive: In this performance-oriented world, sometimes the focus is on
continually improving your weaknesses, instead of building your strengths. Having a
mentor who can help identify where your strong suits are is a key ingredient in continuing
to strengthen them. Remaining focused on the positive, and putting less emphasis on the
negative will aid in building your core strengths.
Develop relevant skills
- A skill set is a combination of abilities, qualities, and experiences you can apply to
perform tasks well. These can include soft skills such as interpersonal skills, organization,
and leadership as well as technical skills such as research, computer programming,
accounting writing, and more. Skills can expand your professional competency and allow
you to perform your job well. You can gain and improve skills with education and
experience. The more advanced you are in performing certain skills, the more likely you
are to get or progress in a job.
5. Weakness improvement
- Recognizing your weaknesses shows a strength of character and resolve. You cannot
improve if you do not accept your skill set may be subpar. Reflect on your strengths and
weaknesses, and then move forward with a strategic improvement plan. Personal
accountability may seem daunting, but the risk is worth the reward. If you can act and
turn weaknesses into strengths, you will be a role model for others.
+ Inventory Strengths and Limitations: Begin by making a list of your weaknesses. Don’t
hold back. List everything you can think of that needs some improvement. If you are
having trouble identifying specific weaknesses, consider incidents that left you feeling
insecure or disappointed in your performance. Next, organize your self-identified
weaknesses into categories, which can make them seem less overwhelming.
+ Set Goals: Set goals to create an action plan for improving weaknesses. Make sure your
goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely (S.M.A.R.T). Review your
goals to ensure they are attainable. Your list of goals acts as a strategic plan for
improving weaknesses. It will also help you prioritize tasks and save time.
+ Obtain Additional Training: Professional development is a key action you can take to
improve weaknesses. As you review your goals, identify areas for improvement that
require new knowledge and training. Many organizations will provide free training, or
even fund external training courses for you.
+ Reward Yourself: As you turn your weaknesses into strengths, be sure to reward
yourself. Improving weaknesses shows that you are self-directed, action-oriented, and
ready to take the next step in your personal and professional journey.
WEAKNESSES WAYS TO IMPROVE
Take on too much - I forced myself to do things I loved that I knew were good for
responsibility me.
- I took a piece of my day and made it more refreshing.
- I started reaching out to people.
- I let myself not be perfect.
- Slow down and take a breather.
- Make a list of priorities.
- Delegate tasks to others
English level is not good - Determine the specific purpose of learning a foreign language
- Choose effective learning methods
- Determine a reasonable study time each day Take advantage of
today's foreign language learning tools
- Find yourself a true mentor
- It's important to be patient
6. The need for self-development
6.1 Skills Required for my job
- Good Communication Skills: As we know, communication is the act of receiving and
sending news, views, ideas, information, etc… from one person to another within the
same or different countries. An IT intern must have good communication skills to make
happy to the client and manager. He should be ready to share his idea with the manager or
client at any time. Without good communication skills, he could not share his idea with
others due to which he cannot get success in his job.
- Teamwork skill: Besides, teamwork is also an extremely important skill. Programmers
need teamwork skills to discuss and coordinate with people in their team to code and fix
bugs in the fastest and most accurate way.
- Observation Skills: Observation skills help us to observe and learn the necessary
experience and knowledge about programming that we do not know.
- Leadership skills: If the IT intern has leadership skills then he can lead and bring control
to other employees of the organization. He can impress his manager with his leadership
skills. He can increase his position if he has good leadership skills
6.2. Knowledge Required for My Job
Every Front End Web Developer needs to understand and master the 3 main
programming languages: CSS, HTML, and Javascript. Learning the front end, you also
need to be familiar with many frameworks such as Foundation, Bootstrap, Angular JS ...
and the LESS, jQuery libraries of Javascript.
- Understanding HTML and CSS: The first two languages you need when learning front-
end programming are HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style
Sheets). Mastering these basic languages will help you design website interfaces.
- JavaScript skills: In addition, Javascript is a programming language that helps create
interaction between the website interface and the user. Javascript, CSS, and HTML are
indispensable elements in building a website. You need to understand HTML, CSS, and
JS to successfully learn front-end programming.
- jQuery:
+ The front end uses a lot of effects and has to communicate with the server via Javascript
frequently. To do so, javascript code is often very long.
+ jQuery is a Javascript programming language library that helps provide effects and
processing methods with just simple command lines.
+ This tool makes it much faster and easier to build functionality using Javascript.
- Understanding Javascript Frameworks:
+ Framework is the architecture that controls the flow of data in the application. Current
Javascript frameworks include Ember, AngularJS, ReactJS, Backbone…
+ Knowing how to properly use these “frameworks” will help you understand how
everything in the app should be organized as well as the basic functions that make it
work. These are also frontend frameworks to keep in mind as you learn front end.
- Experience using CSS Preprocessors:
+ CSS Preprocessors (CSS Preprocessor Language) are responsible for structuring and
localizing CSS code so that it is closer to a programming language.
+ Using CSS Preprocessors will save you time coding, maintaining, and developing CSS
easily. At the same time, it will help organize CSS files more clearly.
+ LESS and SASS are the most used preprocessors today.
- Mobile and Responsive Design: Not only young people but most of today's generations
are accessing the Internet on mobile devices rather than desktops. Therefore, mobile
interface design skills are also important if you want to become a good front-end
developer.
In addition, understanding responsive design will help you make your website compatible
with a variety of electronic devices with diverse display sizes.
- Use a content management system (CMS): CMS (Content Management System) is a
content management system that not only programmers but also website editors, and
content writers... are used to work. The majority of websites today are built on typical
systems like Magento, WordPress, and Drupal. You should be familiar with and familiar
with how to work with this system.
- Problem-solving skills
+ In addition to programming languages, you should also know how to implement and
implement the design as well as how to fix bugs and identify front end, back end code...
+ Quickness and intelligence in problem-solving are prerequisites if you want to know
how to become a front-end developer.
- Knowledge of UI/UX: Learning front-end programming also has two extremely
important elements, which are UI (User Interface) and UX (User Experience). If UI is
visual interface design, UX is the study of how users use a website. From here, you will
know what to change and experiment to make the site grow better.

III. Conduct some research into motivational theories and how they can be used to
improve employee performance. Compare several theories and present your
findings to your peers
- In addition, employees are also distracted by some external influences or are not
appreciated for their roles. Therefore, it is important for businesses at this time to
understand the problem and find opportunities to improve and solve the problem most
reasonably.
- For example, to boost employee morale, you need to give them a clean and tidy working
environment and encourage personalization and reduce clutter in the workspace.
Especially, motivating employees with fair and appropriate remuneration.
2.3. Performance management and well-deserved rewards
- Any employee will have higher performance when they receive the support and reward
that is most deserving of their qualifications and ability to work. Therefore, performance
management and worthy rewards are always essential for businesses in improving
employee performance.
- The most important thing is to train sales staff to participate in training courses to acquire
professional sales skills. Moreover, in-depth product knowledge through practical
experiences at the store helps increase sales significantly for businesses.
2.6. Avoid being annoying
- Instead of letting employees suffer undue influence from social media, businesses should
try to keep their employees focused when they are engaged in work at the office and avoid
distractions. What you can do is encourage employees to turn off their cell phones but
allow them to check and use them during breaks. This will ensure their work time and
productivity achieve the desired effect.
IV. A report on the usage of CPD within organizations and how effective this CPD
is in helping employees achieve their goals.
1. The usage of CPD within organizations.
- CPD effectiveness in the workplace
+ CPD promotes increased confidence for an individual in their respective field and can
ensure their knowledge and skills reach a higher standard as they develop their
effectiveness through training and experience.
+ “Whether you’re looking for a promotion, or you’re hoping to gain employment with a
prestigious company, CPD can help. CPD enables you to stand out from the crowd.” –
The CPD Certification Service
+ If you are out of work or looking to advance in your current role, CPD can help you
reintegrate and refine your skills. Or, if you want to seek a different role with your
current employer, effective CPD can help you find the pathway to new opportunities.
+ A majority of people want a stable career and CPD can help ensure that stability. In a
Skillsoft survey: “of over 400 employees spanning three generations (Baby Boomers,
Generation X, and Millennials), 70% of the respondents indicated that job-related
training and development opportunities influenced their decision to stay at their job.” –
shiftelearning
- Along with many more. Your employer should know what training is a legal
requirement and others that you can benefit from depending on your role and your sector.
- There are plenty of positive reasons you should complete CPD courses and training
activities regularly, such as:
• Maintaining your legal obligations in some roles like food preparation and education
• Keeping up to date with developments in your profession
• Ensuring you are as effective as possible in your role
• Fulfilling the requirements for membership in some professional bodies, e.g. Royal
Institute of Charted Surveyors or the Law Society of Scotland
• Being a better worker on your team by being able to offer professional insight
• Demonstrating your increased skills could lead to a pay rise and promotion
• Applying for jobs is easier when you have CPD certificates that other candidates
don’t have
• Giving you a sense of achievement and goals that you can work towards
- The myriad of benefits speaks for itself. Good employers are aware of the great things
that come from offering CPD training and are likely to help cover some or all of the costs
involved. Even if not, there are clear returns on investment to be had.
