Introduction
 Network management is the process of operating, monitoring, and controlling
the network to ensure it works as intended and provides value to its users.

 Without a well-planned, well-designed network and without a well-organized

network management staff, operating the network becomes extremely difficult .

 Network managers perform two key tasks:

designing new networks and network upgrades and

managing the day-to-day operation of existing networks

2
What do network manager do?
Operational tasks
 manage the day-to-day operation of networks
 provide support to network users
 Manage network technical staff
 Ensure the network is operating reliably
 Evaluate and acquire network hardware, software , and service
 Manage the network budget, with the emphasis on controlling cost

3
Strategic tasks

 Develop a strategic (long-term) networking and voice communication

plan to meet the organizations polices and goals

 Keep abreast of the latest technological developments in computers,

data communication device , network software, telephone technology
and internet

 Assist senior management in understanding the business implication

of network device and the role of the network in business operation
4
Troubleshooting in network
 Troubleshooting refers to the process of identifying problems with a
network through a rigorous and repeatable process and then solving
those problems using testable methods.
 Troubleshooting is more effective than trying things at random until the
network functions because it allows you to target individual network
components, testing each for function, and encourages you to document
your process.

5
Who generally resolve the problem?
Network troubleshooting is primarily done by network engineers
or administrators to repair or optimize a network.

 It is generally done to recover and establish network or Internet

connections on end nodes/devices.

6
Why is network troubleshooting important?
 Helps IT managers understand network component issues, reduce
downtime, and improve the network's Quality of Service (QoS) for users.

 With an effective and reliable network monitoring system, it’s easier to

troubleshoot issues, identify network slowdown quickly, analyze latency
metrics, trace packets, and more.

 Besides troubleshooting, network monitoring systems also help manage

network configurations and monitor crucial metrics such as packet data
and capacity to ensure smooth business-critical operations. 7
Common System and Network Problems
Common computer networking issues cause problems in an office
as well as home setups.
Common as these issues are, they can be solved by just paying a
little attention to details.

8
IP Address and Network Card Issues
 Two computers are assigned the same IP address erroneously; and because the IP
address is the identifying feature of a computer, it leads to obvious connectivity
issues.
 network cards enable computers to link, and faults in the network cards obviously
disrupt connectivity.
 changing the IP address on one computer will fix this problem in no time.
 To resolve the network card issue, pinging another computer is how you test the
network card’s functioning, which should tell you if it needs to be fixed.

9
Network Related Problems
 Problems related to connectivity plague us perpetually, and more often
than not, the solution lies in checking your physical connections and
connection devices.
 Even with Wi-Fi network, there could be some unreachable areas where
radio signals simply refuse to venture; and with a multiple client WLAN,
you must choose a central location to install the router or WAP.
 The Solution: A quick inspection of your router or hub will tell you if
some machine is disconnected, or if the culprit is a faulty cable.
10
Problems Caused by Firewall Status
 Firewall settings can interfere with file sharing on connected computers.
 The firewall settings on someone’s personal computer may actually prevent them
from joining a network properly. These settings can interfere with file sharing on
connected computers.
 It is true that disabling security features can make your system vulnerable to
attacks, but lowering security levels should not cause too much trouble.
 The Solution: Rigid Firewall settings need to be adjusted to allow networked
computers to share data. You may consider disabling the security settings
temporarily, after having thoroughly considered all security related threats.
