Connected car services made easy

A lack of uninterrupted and seamless Internet connectivity is often highlighted as an
obstacle to the growth of the connected car market.

Nokia’s Worldwide IoT Network Grid, or WING, overcomes this barrier.

WING provides a seamless IoT grid to support connected car services. Car makers can avoid
the costs and time needed to agree multiple contracts for IoT sensors and SIMs with local
CSPs. Instead, they have one contract that supports their worldwide IoT connectivity needs.

Smart agriculture made

accessible to farmers
Farmers need an extensive range of hardware, software, connectivity and support to take
advantage of advanced agricultural applications. A local mobile network can provide the
link from field-deployed sensors to Nokia’s Worldwide IoT Network Grid, or WING, core
network solution that manages the connectivity and IoT devices.

WING solves the complexities of deploying an IoT solution involving many partners
and service agreements. A large farm, agricultural collective or Non-Governmental
Organization (NGO) can deploy an IoT solution quickly, without making substantial
capital investments.

With just a cost-effective subscription, individual farmers can access insights via web-

Farming in India gets an IoT boost

Improving the productivity of thousands of farmers in India is a growing imperative to feed
the country’s rising population. As part of a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative by
the Vodafone India Foundation, IoT is helping farmers to better manage their crops.

The Smart Agriculture-as-a-Service solution uses Nokia WING to gather and analyze data
from more than 400 sensors deployed over 100,000 hectares of farmland in the states
of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Soil probes, weather stations, insect traps and crop
cameras provide data that helps improve soy and cotton crop yields, as well as reduce
environmental impacts.

WING core network functionality is at the heart of the solution which also includes
software platforms and data centers; sensors and other hardware; and system integration
with installation, maintenance and operational support.

One contract, 50,000 farmers supported

The project created an ecosystem of stakeholders comprising Vodafone India, NGO
consultant Solidaridad, sustainability experts, university researchers and Nokia. The result
is that with just a single contract, Vodafone India Foundation is helping some 50,000
farmers in the region to improve their livelihoods.

The solution provides local language support on irrigation, pesticide control, information
on crops and weather, as well as a platform for commodity exchange. Nokia together with
Solidaridad is also training agriculture consultants, leading farmers and entrepreneurs
to enable them to advise smaller farms in the use of the smart agriculture platform’s
insights.
WING FOR AGRICULTURE - VF IDEA SUCCESS CASE

Higher crop yields,

lower fuel costs
The data insights help farmers to increase yields and
reduce costs through a cost- effective subscription,
avoiding the need for substantial capital investments.
Industry calculations show that weather and crop data
from across a region, not just on a single farmer’s plot,
is proven to achieve:

7% average yield increase

8% average cut in seed and fertilizer use
6% average reduction in fuel costs

As one local farmer, Niranjan Govindao Dhole, puts it:

“The equipment installed on our farms is helping produce

higher quality cotton. We receive expert guidance on a
regular basis.”
“ Our SmartAgri project is unique as it brings an
entire ecosystem of stakeholders such as Nokia
for its innovative technology, Solidaridad for
project management, and also green experts and
researchers from University - all under one roof, to
positively impact the lives of farmers in India.

A leading manufacturer of industrial air conditioning

equipments, Hitachi Johnson Controls (HJC), has a

customer service and generate new revenue, HJC needs a
cost-effective way to monitor its installed air conditioners.
This enables HJC to implement proactive maintenance and
other services to improve product performance.

HJC selected Marubeni Network Solutions (MNETS) to

provide it with the global connectivity it needed by using
Nokia WING end-to-end IoT connectivity. The agreement
aims to cover around 120,000 units annually.

During manufacturing, an air conditioning unit’s

destination is usually unknown, making it impossible to
fit the right local SIM in the factory. With WING, HJC can

Indonesian smart metering

Indonesia’s state electricity company (SEC) has committed
to install 79 million smart meters across the country over
the next seven years. The plan supports the government’s
aim to reduce its dependence on oil, increase the use of
renewables to 23% of the national energy mix by 2025 and
achieve 100% rural electrification.

To help achieve its goal, SEC turned to Huchison 3

Indonesia (3ID) to provide connectivity for the smart
meters across the country. 3ID uses Nokia WING to enable
it to offer a fully managed service based on WING’s core
network-as-a-Service and connectivity management
platform. The solution can be scaled up rapidly to support

operational costs for SEC as the traditional meters need to be recalibrated in
special test laboratories that have limited capacity.

WING enables SEC to use smart meters to monitor SEC’s president director says that installing smart meters is
consumption and more efficiently manage electricity more efficient than recalibrating old ones and offers more
distribution. The technology also enables automated accurate billing. “The cost of recalibrating a meter is about
billing, electricity theft identification and enhanced the same as changing the meter,” he says, adding: “A faulty
reliability of supply for consumers. device can mean a loss for both consumers and SEC.”

The deployment also eliminates the need for manual

recalibration of millions of traditional meters, which SEC
says often misread consumption. Uncalibrated meters
either overstate power consumption by 15% or understate
it by 17%, according to a 2011 survey.

SEC enjoys substantially reduced operational costs by

Major Thai port

solves delay-causing
issues
Faced with booming container traffic
demand, one of Thailand’s biggest ports
embarked on an initiative to increase
productivity and become one of the
region’s most efficient terminals. The port
operator decided to deploy an IoT solution
to gain a single view of Key Performance
Indicators (KPIs) for port yard operations.

The port operator selected Japanese

MVNO, Marubeni Network Solutions
(MNETS) to implement the solution.
Integrated with MNETS’s access
infrastructure, Nokia WING provides an
end-to-end asset management solution
as-a-Service through a wide range of
sensors and a single platform for greater
asset visibility.
WING FOR PORTS - MNETS SUCCESS CASE

Tracking trucks, checking cranes

Sensors are deployed across the port, with a particular focus on solving
three problem areas:

Tracking trucks as they move across the port collecting and

delivering containers. The port had minimal visibility of traffic
inside the port, often resulting in trucks queuing, causing delays to
shipments.

Measuring crane productivity. The port lacked visibility of how

many container movements its cranes were handling, preventing it
from identifying and implementing productivity improvements.

In Thailand’s hot climate, the port’s cranes sometimes suffered

overheating of bearings and other moving components, causing
unplanned downtime and even resulting in fires.

IoT sensors connected through WING are fitted to trucks and cranes
giving the port real-time visibility of container movements and enabling
it to measure and control operations efficiently. It also receives alerts of
overheating crane components allowing maintenance teams to fix issues
before they cause unplanned downtime and damage.

Port controllers now have instant access to reports tailored to their needs
and accessible through mobile devices or a portal. Managers can see in
real time what is happening across the port.
