Additional student instructions
1. Students must upload their answer scripts in a single PDF file (answer scripts must not be
password protected or uploaded as “read only” files)
2. NO emailed scripts will be accepted.
3. Students are advised to preview submissions (answer scripts) to ensure legibility and that
the correct answer script file has been uploaded.
4. Incorrect file format and uncollated answer scripts will not be considered.
5. Incorrect answer scripts and/or submissions made on unofficial examinations platforms
(including the invigilator cellphone application) will not be marked and no opportunity will be
granted for resubmission.
6. Mark awarded for incomplete submission will be the student’s final mark. No opportunity
for resubmission will be granted.
7. Mark awarded for illegible scanned submission will be the student’s final mark. No
opportunity for resubmission will be granted.
8. Submissions will only be accepted from registered student accounts.
9. Students who have not utilised invigilation or proctoring tools will be subjected to
disciplinary processes.
10. Students suspected of dishonest conduct during the examinations will be subjected to
disciplinary processes. UNISA has a zero tolerance for plagiarism and/or any other forms of
academic dishonesty.
11. Students are provided 30 minutes to submit their answer scripts after the official
examination time. Submissions made after the official examination time will be rejected.

QUESTION 1 RLC CIRCUITS and RESONANCE

1.1 Mention any three conditions for a parallel LC circuit to be at resonance. (3)

2.4 A garage door motor operates of 22 V AC. The only power that is available is
the mains voltage of 220 V AC. A transformer can be used to drive the motor
from the mains.
2.4.1 Which end of the transformer will you connect the mains to and which
end will you connect the motor to. (2)
2.4.2 Draw the circuit diagram of the circuit described. (2)
2.4.3 Calculate the turns ratio of the transformer. (2)
2.4.4 Is the transformer a step-up or step-down transformer? (1)

QUESTION 3 DIODE AND DIODE APPLICATIONS

3.1 List any one applications of diodes (1)


3.2 Explain why a series resistor is necessary when a pn junction is forward-
biased. (1)
3.3 Determine whether each diode for the circuits in Figure 2 is forward- or
reverse-biased. (4)

NB write an alphabet and the answer, example (a) forward biased if the diode in
circuit (a) is forward biased.
