SELF- LEARNING MODULE 15

Configuring Printer Sharing
Writer: Ms. Virgie Alfaras Baylon
Reviewer: Mr. Cyrus N. Caruz
Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the (Computer System Servicing(CSS) Grade-12) Self Learning Module

on (Configuring Printer Sharing) !
This Self Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge
Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership
with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis
N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

WHAT IS PRINTER SHARING

Printer sharing is the process of allowing multiple computers and devices

connected to the same network to access one or more printers. Each node or device
on the network can print to any shared printer and, to some extent, make changes
to the printer settings, depending on the permissions set by the administrator for
each user. If a printer is attached to a computer that supports printer sharing, the
computer can share that printer with other computers on the same network. It
does not matter whether the shared printer is old or new, as long as it is properly
installed in one computer it can be shared by that computer. The sharing is
facilitated by the OS, which handles the communication between computers and
devices within the network and the printer itself. When a print request is sent from
a networked computer, this is received by the computer where the shared printer is
attached; this host computer initializes the printer and then sends the print job to
it. Unfortunately, retrieval of the actual printouts still must be done manually by
the initiator of the print job. In Windows 7 and 8, the printer sharing function can
be activated in the Control Panel as follows: click on the Network and Sharing
Center icon and then click "Change advanced sharing settings"; under "File and
printer sharing", select the "Turn on file and printer sharing" radio button

WR AP UP
PRINTER SHARING TO NETWORK

The computer on a network can share the printer that is directly connected to one
of them. The computer that is directly connected to the printer is the printer server,
and the other computers are the clients which need permission to share the printer
with the printer server. The clients share the printer via the printer server.
To share a printer from the PC that the printer is connected to (the primary PC)
with secondary PCs that the printer is not connected to, you must set up sharing
settings for the printer, connect the printer to the primary PC (either wirelessly or
by using a USB cable), and then turn on the printer. Also make sure the primary
PC is turned on, connected to the printer, and connected to the network.
There are two ways to share your printer:
1. Share your printer using Settings
 Select the Start button, then select Settings > Devices > Printers &
scanners.
 Choose the printer you want to share, then select Manage.
 Select Printer Properties, then choose the Sharing tab.
 On the Sharing tab, select Share this printer.
 If you want, edit the Share name of the printer. You'll use this name to
connect to the printer from a secondary PC.
2. Share your printer using Control Panel
 In the search box on the taskbar, type control panel and then
select Control Panel.
 Under Hardware and Sound, select View devices and printers.
 Select and hold (or right-click) the printer you want to share,
select Printer properties, and then choose the Sharing tab.
 On the Sharing tab, select Share this printer.
