version of Mosaic
1995
Internet Explorer was developed and served as Microsoft’s first web
browser.
1996
Opera started as a research project in 1994 that finally went public
two years later. The beginning of the browser wars, primarily Internet Explorer 3
(IE 3) versus Netscape Navigator 3. Internet Explorer edged ahead with
innovative features.
2003
Apple Macintosh computers adopted Safari browser instead of
Navigator.
2004
Mozilla Firefox was introduced and became popular while Netscape
Navigator was terminated.

2007
Mobile Safari was created as Apple’s mobile web browser and still
dominates the iOS market.
2008
Chrome was introduced by Google and now takes over the web
browser market.
2011
Opera Mini was developed specifically on the fast-growing mobile
browser market.
2015
Microsoft Edge was created to compete against Google Chrome.
There are several internet browsers which we will also explore. An article
from Kingpin.com, Slimjet, and Tutorialpoint.com discussed the several types of
web browsers and their purposes.
1. Google Chrome
It is the most popular web browser today which was
developed by the internet giant Google. It dominates more than
half of the browser market. Its main feature is loading multiple
tabs and pages at great speed. It is considered one of the fastest
browsers. Another characteristic of Chrome making it distinct
from other browsers is its user-interface simplicity. The Google
search bar and address bar in Chrome are combined in one Omnibox which is
truly a user-friendly feature. Other than that, it focuses to enhance the
performance of web applications. There are hundreds of convenient extensions
for free download at Chrome Store. It can be used for personal use which
increases productivity. It is also customizable with a range of apps and themes.
Google Chrome also has Educational features. You might be using Google
Classroom right now to view this module with the great convenience of easy
access and interactivity. Your Google device data could also be easily synced if
you sign in to Chrome using your Google browser. Nevertheless, many people
choose not to use Chrome because it is Google-based and consumes a lot of
memory. Some positive features of Chrome are:
• Private browsing
• Fast Startup
• Phishing/ Malware Filter

2. Mozilla Firefox
It is a browser developed by Mozilla which became the
second most popular browser a few years after its release.
Although it is slower than Chrome, many people still prefer this
as a second option especially those who dislike Google-based
products. It is offered for Linux and Android operating systems
as well. The new version of Firefox is faster than its previous
versions and consumes less RAM than Chrome. However, Firefox drains the
battery very quickly especially if you are watching HD movies. You may prefer
other browsers to save your battery.
Mozilla Firefox offers a lot of plugins and extensions with some powerful
developer tools. Advanced users prefer its constant updates, the high
performance delivered, and customizable interface. Firefox enables open
architecture which allows the installation or deletion of themes and extensions.
A customizable new look is provided by different themes within the browser. Web
developers can encode extensions to make the browser execute functions as
wanted like open your Gmail account when the browser loads. You may also
block all ads.
Many Chrome users find Firefox more refreshing because Chrome lately
incorporated so many features making it look like not a browser anymore.
Chrome focused on an all-inclusive app that provides several features and it
seems browsing is just an option. Conversely, Firefox is a dedicated browser.
Moreover, when it comes to privacy, Firefox is advance than Chrome. Other
encouraging features of Firefox are:
• RSS Headlines
• Chat Extensions
• Spam/ Malware Filter
3. Opera
Opera is full-featured, faster, yet smaller than most other
browsers. It is user-friendly with a keyboard interface, multiple
windows, and zoom function making it more ideal to be used by
school children, handicap, and newcomers on the internet. While
it has various remarkable features such as a built-in adblocker, it
still stays behind the two most popular browsers. However, there are a lot of
reasons for you to try using this browser. Unlike Chrome and Firefox who uses
some unsafe and inconvenient third party extension, Opera has its range of
extension which are guaranteed safe. It also supports several major apps like
Facebook messenger and Whatsapp. Opera can also be synced across multiple
devices. It allows you to customize the browser with a dark mode and some
themes. The customization options are far less simple than Firefox and Chrome.

Some special features of Opera include a newsreader that allows you to
access daily news direct from the browser. Java and non-Java-enabled versions
available. It is also a free fast browser with good support for updates. Some
other features are:
• Email suite
• Phishing Filter
• Bit Torrent
4. Apple Safari
Safari is a web browser created by Apple Inc. If you own an
iPhone or iPad, Safari is the browser embedded in your iOS. It is
the most popular browser with MAC users. It is a very simple and
clean browser with several positive features. Safari is very fast
powered by the WebKit rendering engine. It has basic
functionalities like multiple tabs operation, easy bookmarking, fast speeds, and
a plugin library. It can also be used on a PC even if it is powered by Mac.
However, Safari will be like just another browser on a PC. On the other hand,
using Mac and iPhones, you’ll enjoy the cross-platform compatibility that it
holds. You could integrate your data across multiple platforms.
Another feature of Safari is the iCloud Keychain that will aid you access
passwords saved on your Apple devices. There could be no practical use of Safari
to non-Apple users. It lacks openness and fewer customization options for them.
But this is the number one choice for Apple devices because of its compatibility.
5. Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer (IE) was before and for the longest time
the most popular browser. It truly revolutionized and promoted
the use of the internet to the public as it was the default browser
by the most user-friendly operating system - the Microsoft
Windows package. It is still very popular with many internet
users even upon its near replacement with the Microsoft Edge
browser. However, there are some big issues with IE like its startup speed.
Necessary features like Active X capabilities, SmartScreen Filters, a list of
recommended sites and more accumulates to the slow loading of this browser.
Internet Explorer is still considered to be falling behind in the race, but its
counterpart the Microsoft Edge promises a fast load, packed with the latest
features. Microsoft still has the potential to be at the top of the internet browser
market and takedown Google Chrome.
