Unintterruptible Power Supply
An uninterruptible power supply or a UPS system is an electrical apparatus that
provides emergency power to a load when the input power source or mains power
fails. UPS system performs three primary functions: conditions the incoming dirty
power from the utility company to give you clean, uninterruptible power, provides
ride-through power to cover for sags or short-term outages, and enables seamless
system shutdown during a complete power outage.
UPS
UPS Sections
Uninterruptible power supplies are generally divided into five sections;
1-) Rectifier: It generates the charging of the batteries and DC power for the Inverter.
2-) Inverter: It converts the DC voltage provided by the batteries and the charging unit to
AC.
3-) Batteries: It contains the DC voltage required by the Inverter when the main power
failed.
4-) Static By-Pass: It ensures that the load is transferred to the network without
interruption in case of overload or any malfunction.
5-) RS-232 / USB communication unit: It provides monitoring of information about
uninterruptible power supply.
RECTIFIER
Rectifiers are used to obtain the DC voltage required for the inverter to operate, converts the AC
voltage to DC voltage.
Rectifiers can also be used to charge the battery string by providing DC current and voltage
control.
Depending on the UPS types, rectifiers can be 1-phase input or 3-phase input.
BATTERY STRING
As a backup of the rectifier, battery strings provides the DC voltage necessary for the
operation of the inverter.
It consists of batteries with the same capacity and characteristics connected in series to
obtain the appropriate voltage according to the UPS type.
While the mains voltage is present, the batteries are charged by the rectifier and DC energy
is stored in the batteries.
When the mains voltage goes out of the tolerance or power outage occurs, the DC voltage
required for the inverter to work is provided by the battery string.

3-) All switches and breakers present on the PowerLine frames (excluded the Manual bypass switch Q60) can
be now turned OFF.
