Lesson’s Objectives
Identify processes that occur on the surface of the
Earth such as weathering, erosion, mass wasting, and
sedimentation

Differentiate endogenic and exogenic processes that

continuously shape the Earth

Describe the Plate Tectonic theory and Continental

Drift Hypothesis that supports the endogenous and
exogenous processes of the Earth.

Alfred Wegener
• Set forth his continental drift
hypothesis.
• He proposed that there is a
supercontinent called Pangaea that
began breaking apart into smaller
continents about 200 million years
ago.
• Wegener and others collected
substantial evidence to support
these claims.

The Continental Jigsaw Puzzle

Wegener first suspected that the continents might

have been joined when he noticed a remarkable
similarity between coastlines on opposite sides of the
South Atlantic. The fit of South America and Africa is
a classic example of this evidence.

Fossils that Match Across the Seas

Wegener cites an article about the fossil that can be

evidence for the existence of a land bridge
connecting South America and Africa. There is also
an existence of identical fossils on widely separated
landmasses called Mesosaurus.

Rock Types and Structures Match

Such evidence exists of continuous rock types and

mountain belts are evident by Appalachian mountains
northeastward of North America and Caledonian
mountains in British Isle and Scandinavia. The rocks
were comparably the same structure and age.

Ancient Climates
Alfred Wegener was a meteorologist and he observed
the paleoclimatic (ancient climate) data in support of
continental drift. Glacial deposits indicate that near
the end of the Paleozoic era (between 200 and 300
million years ago), ice sheets covered extensive areas
of the Southern Hemisphere.
