Building a computer system for university students

A computer is an electronic device, operating under the control of


instructions stored in its own memory that can accept data, process the data
according to specified rules, produce information, and store the information for
future use. Computer system is a combination of hardware and software structures.
Hardware is any physical device such as the monitor, mouse, keyboard, hard disk
drive, graphic cards, sound cards, memory, motherboard and chips, etc. All of
which are physical objects that can be touched. Software structures consist of
operation systems and applications.
A computer is an essential for a university student like us. To build a
computer system by yourself, we need the case, motherboard, CPU, cooler, RAM,
hard disk drive or solid-state drive, power supply, graphic card, operation system
and applications.

Motherboard
Motherboard is the circuit board that connects everything together with
hardware, the power supply and the graphics cards and also known as heart of the
computer. So, it’s the first component we will want to choose. We want to choose
our motherboard based on other compatible components like RAM and CPU.

CPU
CPU is a central procesing unit or a central processor unit. The CPU
provides the processing power and instructions behind all your computer’s
operations. The arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and control unit (CU) are parts of the
central processing unit. ALU carries out arithmetic and logic operations on the
operands in computer instruction words. CPU speed describes GHz or MHz
(Gigahertz, Megahertz).
Memory
Memory is the data storage unit and it has two types. They are volatile and
non-volatile. ROM and RAM are volatile and HDD, SSD, USB Stick, SD card are
non-volatile. Adding memory (RAM) is one of the fastest, easiest, and most
affordable ways to amplify the performance of the computer you're building. RAM
gives your system more available space to temporarily store data that's being used,
so it helps you carry out simultaneous tasks, such as having several tabs open while
surfing the web without long load times.

Hard Disk Drive (HDD)


Files and data are saved on your storage drive — either a hard disk drive
(HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD). The hard disk drive is the computer’s main
storage media device that permanently stores all data on the computer. They are
non-volatile storage. They can install operating system. Hard disk drives are
connected to system by standard interface ace cables as serial advance technology
attachment (SATA) that is a new version. On the back of a hard drive is a circuit
board called the disk controller.
Power Supply Unit
A power supply unit is a type of power converter that provides direct current
(DC) voltage to internal computer components. Some of these units are designed
specifically for use with 110 or 230 volts alternating current (AC), while others can
be switched between the two or even accept any voltage within that range. The
level of direct current voltage that they provide can also vary, typically between 3-
and 12-volts DC. The most common type of power supply unit is designed
specifically for use with the advanced technology extended (ATX) form factor.
These ATX power supply units are similar to the earlier advanced technology (AT)
units, aside from the way they connect to motherboards and power switches.
