VACANCY NOTICE

Open to Internal and External Candidates

Position Title : Laboratory Technologist


VN No : IOMKCO/VN/059/2021
Duty Station : Kakuma
Classification : General Service Staff, Grade G5
Type of Appointment : One Year Fixed Term, with possibility of extension.
Estimated Start Date : As soon as possible

Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of

Context:

Under the overall supervision of the Head of Sub Office Kakuma, the direct supervision of the
Laboratory Supervisor and with technical guidance of the Sub Regional Laboratory
Coordinator for East and Horn of Africa and the incumbent will perform laboratory procedures
as part of the Health Assessment, following routine protocols to ensure that identified refugees
are medically fit to migrate in accordance with the medical/health requirements of the
resettlement countries.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

In particular, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

1. Strict adherence to all bio-safety measures required.


2. Collect specimens for medical screening or treatment follow-up of migrants.
3. Following internationally accepted laboratory procedures when processing
specimens for HIV, Hepatitis, Syphilis, Tuberculosis, Urine examinations.
4. Conduct Tuberculosis level III laboratory functions including TB Microscopy, TB
culture by liquid and solid culture media, drug susceptibility testing and TB
molecular testing.
5. Maintaining computerized laboratory records.
6. Provide timely result posting of laboratory examinations.

7. Assist with procurement matters as required.
8. Assist in providing logistical support for laboratory activities.
9. Conduct Internal and External Quality Assurance procedures.
10. Assisting in DNA specimen’s collection.
11. Assisting in preparation and updating of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
12. Performs any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

• Completed High School Degree/Certificate in Laboratory Science or a related field


from an accredited academic institution with five years of relevant professional
experience.
Or;
• Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent, or Higher in the above fields with three years of
relevant professional experience.

Experience

1. Valid license to work as Laboratory Technologist.


2. Minimum three years relevant working experience in busy laboratory/medical
institutions, International Organizations or NGOs dealing with refugees/migrants.
3. Phlebotomy experience required, and should be conversant in biological specimen
collection, storing, packaging and transporting.
4. Experience in TB culture laboratory is an advantage.
5. Demonstrated ability to maintain accuracy and confidentiality in performing
responsibilities.
6. Strong practical computer skills including MS Word, Excel and Outlook

Languages

Fluency in both written and spoken English and Swahili.
