Syllabus IB
Course objectives:
A. To develop the ability to communicate accurately and effectively in speech
and writing within a range of contexts.
B. To develop the ability to understand and respond to the language
demands of social contacts.
C. To provide students with a sound linguistic base for further study, work
and leisure.
D. To offer insights into the culture of the countries where the language is
spoken.
Assessment objectives:
There are six assessment objectives for the language B course. Students will be
assessed on their ability to:
1. Communicate clearly and effectively in range situations, demonstrating
linguistic competence and intercultural understanding.
2. Use language appropriate to a range of interpersonal and/or cultural
contexts.

3. Understand and use language to express and respond to a range of ideas
with accuracy and fluency.
4. Organize ideas on a range of topics, in a clear, coherent and convincing
manner.
5. Understand, analyze and respond to a range of written and spoken texts.
6. Understand and use works of literature written in the target language of
study (HL only).
Syllabus outline:
The core—with topics common to both levels—is divided into three areas and
is a required area of study.

In addition, at both SL and HL, teachers select two from the following five

•Please note that the Quarter exams and the final exam will each be worth
only 20% of the final grade of the year . There is a final exam for IB I class.

Internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB.
Individual oral (8–10 minutes)
Based on the options: 15 minutes’ preparation time and a 10-minute
(maximum) presentation and discussion with the teacher. 20%
Interactive oral activity: Based on the core: Three classroom activities assessed
by the teacher. 10%

Class Expectations
This class is geared towards the use of the student’s knowledge of the French
language. Speaking in French and participating in class are requirements.
Students should come to class prepared and participate during the class
activities. The student is expected to participate in the following:

-Class participation: discussions, reflections, dialogues and conversations.
-Completion of class work, homework and oral projects.
-Oral presentations: (individual and group)
-Cultural activities.
Classroom Rules
Everyone is expected to show respect for oneself and for others as well as for
school property at all time and to obey school rules. There will be no food or
drink allowed in the classroom, with the exception of bottled water. Students
will not have cell phones on their person, their desk, or visible in any way. Cell
phones (or any electronic devices) must be silenced, out of sight and stored in
their backpack at all times unless specifically permitted for instructional
purposes.
Honor Policy:
Students will be asked to sign an honor pledge for each major assignment turned in. By signing
the pledge, students will acknowledge their understanding of the honor policy and that they have
not violated that policy in any way.
“On my honor, I pledge that this assignment reflects my own efforts and work.”
Arlington Public Schools (APS) pays for the examination fees for all IB classes. Any student who
registers for an IB class but chooses not to complete the required internal assessment and/or sit for
the May examination must pay a drop fee. All fees are established by the International
Baccalaureate Organization. Additionally, as outlined in the APS Program of Studies, students who
do not complete the required assessments will not earn the additional quality point.
As an advanced course, students are expected to perform at or above a “C” at all times. Grades below
a 70% are considered unsatisfactory, even though students will be earning extra quality points when
they complete the course Internal Assessment (IA) and sit for the external IB examination. Students
who complete both on time will be exempt from final examinations for this course. Students who fail
to submit the required IA will not be eligible to sit for the external examination. Students who do not
sit for the external examination will be awarded a mark of "N", no mark, by the International
Baccalaureate Organization. This will result in the loss of the quality point on the school transcript
and they will be required to take a final exam on the date specified in the WLHS calendar. If this
happens, the final course grade will be an average of the four quarter grades and the final exam
grade. AP AND IB EXAMS Arlington Public Schools (APS) pays for the examination fees for all AP and IB
courses. Any student who registers for an AP or IB course but does not take the corresponding exam
or complete the required IB internal assessment (IA), will be required to reimburse APS for their
examination fee(s). The cost of each exam is established by the College Board and International
Baccalaureate Organization.
