Adolescence
This is the period between childhood and adulthood.
An adolescent is a person between 12 and 20 years of age.
- Adolescents always grow fast in height and size and they experience many more body
changes
- They also experience many social, emotional and intellectual changes
Examples of body changes in adolescent
a) Physical changes
- Both girls and boys develop pubic hair.
- Girls begin to menstruate
- Girls breasts begin to enlarge
- Boys develop deep voices
- Boys become muscular.
b) Social changes
- Develop desires to relate with the different sex (boys and girls)
- Join peer groups / Develop interests to hang out with peers
c) Emotional changes
- They become moody and uncontrollable
- They become short tempered easily
- They hate counsel from elders
d) Intellectual changes
- They increase in their reasoning
- They acquire a desire to discover more (adventurous)

Our families are made up of brothers, sisters, grandparents, uncles, aunties, cousins. All these
are people to whom we are related by blood and we call them relatives
We should relate with our relatives through avoiding bad practices.
Examples of bad practices we should avoid towards our relatives.

- Pride - discrimination
- Jealousy
Good ways through which we should relate with our relatives
- By loving them
- By being kind to them
- Through loyalty or by being loyal and truthful to them

Normally all children relate with other children.
These ways include:

Needy people are those people who require our special attention.

Society is made up of different group of people, with which we live and should
show consideration and respect these are:

Each one of us has a contribution to make in society our different abilities are used
differently to develop our society has many areas of need in which we can make a
contribution.
o Politics

o Economic development
o Helping the needy
o Church ministry and different people make different contribution you can’t
combine to all.
As we live with each other we should be considerate of one another despite our many
differences some so good better than others we should learn to live along with others
peacefully.
Before God all of us are equal we should therefore live/ be considerate and respectful to all
other people.

We need to take Jesus’ example he respected and appreciated all people without
discrimination-poor, prostitutes, sinners, lame, small children. We should have a positive
attitude towards people.
Positive attitude:- is having a good feeling about something.
Having a positive attitude towards other people “reading and comprehending the story of
Byaruhanga and the shop keeper”

- A positive attitude is having a good feeling about something.
- A youth is a person who is between 18 and 30 years (according to the Uganda law)
- Work is any useful or productive activity that requires / involves use of energy.
Through work we are able to support our lives and make contributions to society
- Society requires different services from each one of us

The youth should always take opportunity to work not only doing office jobs but also manual
jobs e.g. farming, carpentry, building, brick making, e.t.c.
In order to work responsibly or develop a good attitude towards work we need to.
Points to remember when developing a good attitude towards work. Living responsibly
- We need to respect all kinds of work
- We need to work hard, honestly and responsibly
- We need to treat our fellow employees well
- We need to respect our employers
- We need to acknowledge that whatever we do is God’s plan for us
We glorify God through work it pleases God when we work
Youth in Uganda today despise some types of work, others hate work.
- Many youth hate work
- They also despise some types of work e.g brick making even domestic work
- Youth should not only expect to do office work but also manual work.
God also expects us to work.
In the bible Paul encouraged us to work.
He says – in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 “whoever does not work must not eat”
- All people have to work rich poor your old educated and un educated
- God was the first worker we note in the bible he created the world in 6 days.
- Jesus after going up also worked, preached God’s words, healed the sick and disabled.
- Work is for our own good, our families and the communities we live in.
The value of work
This means the worth/ importance of work. We work to:-
- To get money
- It enables us to serve others
- It enables us to take care of God’s creation
- Its for learning purposes
- It brings self fulfillment
- We work for enjoyment / kills boredom
- Work earns us respect in the society
- Work reduces our dependence on other people

HIV / AIDS
Stands for Human Immuno – Deficiency Virus the virus that cases a disease called AIDs
- HIV kills the while blood cells, the cells that protect the body against infections caused
by viruses or bacteria.

- These infections lead to lack of Immunity. These blood cells form a bigger part of the
immune system of the body when they are killed, the body becomes immune deficient.
It becomes unprotected or defenceless against all sorts of diseases.
- As the body becomes defenceless many deseases attack it. The many signs and
symptoms of such diseases are what for on a syndrome.

Election malpractices as a form and cause of suffering.
An election is democratic way of choosing a leader
People continue their r riles and choose leaders of their listening.
Democratic leadership when people in a country have the light to choose their own leads.
- In most cases elections are meant to be free and fair, but this is never the case.
- People engage in malpractices through ridging votes for their favorite candidates not
considering abilities and prospects that person may have for the position.
- These elections follow and particular guideline
- If the roles are not followed malpractice happens.
Effects of election malpractices
Malpractices may lead to:-
- A malpractice is that action that breaks the law or roles governing on election in order to
gain an advantage for oneself.
- They happen when one wants to check elections.
- When rigging uses takes place those who feel were checked refuse to accept the
outcomes and a war may break out causes / different effects.
- Election of incompetent leaders causing suffering to the people.
- Brings corrupt leaders into leadership and these selfishly use the country’s resources
causing underdevelopment hence making the nation to suffer.
- Capable leaders are not given chance to lead.
- War may break at
- People are displaced from their homes
- Property and life may be lost

Pregnancy is largely a result of a holy marriage . When teenage girls engage in pre-
marital sex they can end up pregnant.
How to avoid it
Through abstaining from early sex.
Using condoms if one cannot avoid it.
Staying in school.
Listening to advice from parents and elders.

WAYS IN WHICH JESUS SHARED IN THE SUFFERING OF OTHERS
Since Jesus was human he shared in the suffering of others too:
Jesus died that our sins may be forgiven
He took our place and paid for all our wrong doing that he may have life.
1. When he sympathized with some people e.g the woman who was going to be stoned to death
after committing adultery (john 8:1 – 11)
- The woman had been put to public shame and was yet to be killed but Jesus saved her life
2. Jesus wept on losing his friend called Lazarus (john 11:35)
3. He visited and ate food with sinners who had been looked at as outcast by society (Luk 19:6 -
10) e.g. Zaccheus.
4. When he responded positively to the sinner who had been crucified with him i.e. “today I
promise you, you will be with me in paradise” (Luk 23:41 – 43) when we suffer we lose
hope. Jesus too was sorrowful, worried and afraid but Jesus shared in our suffering to show
us that suffering do not mean end of one ‘s hope

- Through Jesus concern for others we learn to share in the suffering of others with
strength and courage
DIFFERENT WAYS IN WHICH WE CAN SHARE IN THE SUFFERING OF OTHERS
- By praying for those who are suffering
- By nursing people who are suffering
- By giving them material assistance
- By offering guidance and counseling to those who are suffering
- By providing medical care and treatment
- By advocating for and protecting the rights of others who are being denied justice

We have learnt that suffering is for all of us and from Jesus’ example we have seen that we have
to help / share in the suffering of others.
Through sharing and helping those are suffering in society, we are able to prevent many social
evils
E.g. jealousy .prostitution, theft, pride, neglect, curding, drug abuse, fighting and rebellions

A redeemer is a person who saves someone from the power of evil
To redeem is to save some one from the power of evil
Christ as a way of restoring broken relationship
- Adam and eve committed the original sin by disobeying God.
- Adam and eve and their off springs lost fellowship with God
- As descendants of Adam and eve we have also lost God’s love and have therefore been
born in sin
- All people should therefore seek to restore their relationship with God, but man cannot do
this alone, they cannot restore the lost relationship
- God sent his son Jesus Christ to restore the broken relationship through to death on the
cross.
- Jesus’ death paid the price for our sins and through repentance to him we can reach God
again.
GOD CALLS HIS MESSENGERS
A messenger is a person who delivers messages
A messenger from God is a person who delivers God’s message to the people.
God called different messengers to take his messages to both the faithful and unfaithful people
Some messages who received God’s message included
Abraham
Joshua
John the Baptist
Moses
Prophets like Hosea, Jeremiah and Isaiah
Most of the above messengers were sent to make a way for the savior
Prophets; a prophet is a person sent by God to teach and give God’s message to the people.
A prophet can also be a person who predicts (foretells) the future and it comes true.
WAYS THROUGH WHICH GOD CALLS HIS MESSAGERS

2. Through direct communication e.g. Abraham and Joshua
3. Through God’s angels (Gabriel and john the Baptist)

- He agreed to leave his homeland to go to the land and would show him
- He agreed to sacrifice his only son Isaac.

REASONS WHY MOSES WAS CHOSEN TO LEAD GOD’S PEOPLE
Israelites to the Promised Land
- He was courageous / brave
- He was obedient / faithful and respectful
- He knew the Hebrew language and how to speak to the people.
- He knew the geography of Egypt since he had lived there before.

- Joshua led them across R. Jordan into the Promised Land.
God calls Gideon (Judges 6:11 – 16)
- Gideon was a brave and mighty young man whom God called at a time when the
Israelites where being defeated by the tribe of the medianites
- He was a son of Joash and one day when he was threshing wheat, an angel of the lord
came and sat under a nearby tree.

“The lord is with you brave and mighty man”
- Gideon complained before the angel of God why he failed to rescue them yet they heard
about him as a mighty God.
- The angel assured Gideon of God’s presence and how he was determined to help them.
- By God’s help Gideon defeated the medianites.
The call of John the Baptist (Mat 3:1 – 12)
- He was the last messenger to prepare a way for the coming of Jesus the messiah / savior
- He was a son of Zachariah and Elizabeth
- He preached to people to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of their sins
- The coming of John the Baptist had been foretold by Isaiah the prophet (Isa 40:1-5)
- He lived a simple life in the desert
- He wore clothes made of camel’s chair ,his food was locusts and honey
- His message was “turn away from your sins because the kingdom of God is near”/ repent
and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins.
- All the people who repented were baptized by John the Baptist in R. Jordan
