 Explain the situations in line with respect of equality.

 Express thoughts or reflection about the song Upuan.

I. DEFINITIONS:

EQUALITY: the quality or state of being equal or of having the same rights, social status, etc. The state of being equal,
especially in status and opportunities, and in the eyes of God, all persons are equal regardless of their color, race,
gender and wealth

EQUAL: the same in number, amount, degree, rank, or quality.

QUALITY: a high level of value or excellence.

RESPECT: a feeling or understanding of admiring that someone or something is important, good, valuable, serious and
should be treated in an appropriate way.

II. QUOTATION
1. “ I have dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color
of their skin, but by content of their character” --- Martin Luther King
2. Galatians 3:28
“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male or female; for you are
all one in Christ Jesus.”

III. PROTECTED CHARACTERISTICS UNDER THE EQUALITY

1. Age – Every human person, old and young people should complement one another. Everyone should
always consider abilities of any age that may be useful in some ways.
Example: The president of the Philippines complements his secretary after the meaning in
Malacańang.
2. Disability – There are people who were not given a chance to live a normal life and with complete and
functional body. Although there are persons with disability they two can make something especial.
Example: Nick Vujicic becomes a excellent preacher, swimmer, singer and role model despite of his
disability.
3. Gender reassignment – sometimes there are man who becomes woman physically even in his
genitals. Although this may consider immoral we still need treat them normal because they are still
human beings. They may be committed sins but still the goodness of their hearts remains. Everybody
commits sins.
Example:
4. Marriage and civil partnership – There are four kinds of husband and wife. Some were married in the
church, some were married in civil, some were live-in, and some were mistress.
Example: The parish priest helps his live-in parishioners to get marry so that the ratio of unmarried
couple will be lessened.
5. Pregnancy & maternity – pregnancy is a precious gift from God for bearing a new life of human. Thus,
pregnant woman should be given proper rights equally.
Example: a teenage girl was pregnant at a young age but we may consider it as a blessing and not a
sin.
6. Race – we should not judge a person base on the color of the screen or from what race he came.
Example: I have dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be
judged by the color of their skin, but by content of their character” --- Martin Luther King
7. Religion and/or belief – we have different religion and beliefs but it must divide us into helping one
another but rather it must unite us into being human.
Example: A Catholic priest helps a group of Muslims who are victims of war and calamities.
8. Sex and Sexual orientation – we are created in the image and likeness of God. Even though there are
people which is opposite sex or beyond our sex should still be consider as human.

IV. ENEMIES OF EQUALITY

1. Discrimination – the practice of unfairly treating a person or group of people differently from other
people or groups of people.
a. Direct Discrimination - “Person A directly discriminates against Person B when A treats B less
favourably than A would treats or would treat others in the same circumstances”
Example: “A 70 year old lady was refused a broadband contract by Carphone Warehouse in the UK
and was told that she could only register if she came to the store with a younger member of her
family. The Carphone Warehouse had provided guidance to staff not to sell broadband contracts
to customers aged 70+ as they believe they will not understand the terms of the contract.”

b. Indirect Discrimination - “This happens when a requirement is applied equally to everyone but has
the effect of excluding one group of people more than another”
Example: Your employer brings in a new shift pattern which means that everyone has to work
fewer but longer days. You have a disability that means you’re exhausted after two long days of
working. So the new shift pattern puts you and other people who have the same disability as you
at a disadvantage. Your employer will have indirectly discriminated against you if it can’t justify
the new shift pattern.

c. Associative Discrimination - “you were accused of something even though you are not part of it.
You were blame by something you did not do.”
Example: You become the leader of your group project which consists of group mates who are
known as worst students. Even though you are not like them the teacher gave your group a failing
grade due to the characteristics of your group mates.

d. Perceptive Discrimination - Discrimination against an individual because of a perception that he or

she has a protected characteristic when he or she does not, in fact, have that protected
characteristic
Example: An employer rejects a job application submitted by a white man whom the employer
wrongly assumes to be black because he has an African name
e. Victimisation - This happens when an individual is singled out because they have used the system
to make a complaint or challenge treatment
Example: “If you are lesbian and your fellow colleagues started passing unwelcome comments
about your sexuality and you complained to your manager, but rather than doing something
about the problem you are sacked for no reason or for no good reason and you believe that it is
because of the complaint you raised, you may claim compensation for being victimised for making
a complaint about sexual orientation discrimination.”

f. Disability Discrimination - Person A discriminates a disabled Person B if A treats B unfavourably

because of something arising in consequence of B’s disability.
Example: “Amir is a 12-year-old student with autism and sensory difficulties. One day he becomes
very anxious when the fire alarm goes off in school. He stands with his hands covering his ears and
is unable to move. The teacher tells Amir to leave the building but the pupil is frozen to the spot.
The teacher shouts at Amir and the situation escalates to a point where the pupil attacks the
teacher with a pencil and hit the teacher in her eye. Amir is kick-out from school for assaulting the
teacher.”

2. Favoritism – the unfair practice of treating some people better than others.
John 2:8-9 = “If you really keep the royal law found in scripture, ‘Love uor neighbor as yourself’ , you
are doing right. But if you sho favouritism, you sin….”
3. Assumptions – arrogance, pretention, an assuming that something is true.
a. WHAT assumptions do we make about people?
b. WHY do we come to the conclusions we do?
c. WHEN do we tend to make these assumptions?
d. WHERE can this cause us difficulties?
e. HOW can we stop ourselves doing this?
f. WHO does it and who does it affect?

For ever and ever Now and for always
