Number of Valid Hosts per Subnet

IP Address Classifications
Subnet Mask Range
Formula to determine the number of
Subnets:
2^ # of subnet bits
Formula to determine the number of
valid Hosts:
2^ # of host bits -2
Example:
Find the number of bits and valid
host.
IP Address:192.168.1.0 /28
Steps:
Subnet
• Identify theMask: 255.255.255.240
type of IP Address in a
network
• Convert the Subnet Mask into bits
• Apply the formula to identify the
number of bits and valid hosts
Solution:
Identify the type of IP Address in a network
 192.168.1.0 is a Class C IP Address
Convert the Subnet Mask into bits Subnets Hosts

11111111.11111111.11111111.11110000
Apply the formula to identify the number of
bits and valid hosts
Subnets = 24
= 16
Hosts = 24 - 2
= 14
Example:
Find the number of bits and valid
host.
IP Address:150.150.0.0 /30
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.252
Steps:
• Identify the type of IP Address in a
network
• Convert the Subnet Mask into bits
• Apply the formula to identify the
number of bits and valid hosts
Exercises:
Find the number of bits and valid
host of the following IP address.
1. 192.168.4.0 /24
2. 16.1.1.1 /7
3. 172.168.0.0 /19
