SOLUTION
MOTION IN A STRAIGHT LINE
1. Are rest and motion absolute or relative terms?
Yes both are relative terms
An object at rest in one frame of reference can be in motion in another frame of
reference.
4. A ball is thrown straight up. What is its velocity and acceleration at the top?
At the highest point, the velocity of the ball is zero and its acceleration is equal to
acceleration due to gravity acting in the downward direction.
10. A balloon is rising up with a velocity of 9.8 ms–1 and a bag is dropped from it when its
height from the ground is 39.2 m. Calculate the time taken by the bag to reach the
ground.
V = -9.8m/s at t=0 so this is u, S = 39.2m, g = 9.8m/s2
S = ut + 1/2gt2
Ans: t =4s
11. What can you say about the nature of acceleration, associated with a mass whose v-t
graph is shown?
12. The velocity-time graph of a particle moving along a straight line is as shown in the
following graph. Calculate the distance covered between t = 0 to 10 s. Also find
displacement in that time.
Distance = area triangle + Area of triangle + area of rectangle =100m
Triangle= ½ b h
Rectangle = lb
Displacement = area triangle - Area of triangle + area of rectangle =60m
13. Figure given below shows the variation of velocity of a particle with time.
Displacement = area
Acceleration = slope
1. 8, 16, 12m
2. 8, 0, -8/3 m/s2 Y2-Y1/X2-X1
14. Figure shows the acceleration-time graph for a particle moving along a straight line. Find
the following: (Assume the particle starts from rest.)
(i) Velocity at the end of (a) 3 sec. (b) 6sec.
(ii) Displacement at the end of (a) 4 sec. ii…10s
(iii) Does the direction of motion change during the motion?
15. A body falling from rest was observed to fall through 78.4 m in 2s. Find how much time
had it been falling before it was observed?
16. The displacement of a particle along x-axis is given by x = 4 + 8t + 14t 2. Obtain its
velocity and acceleration at t = 2s.
