11. (a) The space between two square flat parallel plate is filled with oil each side of the plate is 600mm.
The thickness of the oil film is 12.5mm. The upper plate which moves at 2.5m/s requires a force of
98.1N to maintain the speed. Determine
a. (i) The dynamic viscosity of the oil in poise and
b. (ii) The kinematic viscosity of the oil in stokes if the specific gravity of the oil is 0.95
(OR)
(b) Derive the Euler’s equation of motion and deduce the expression to Bernoulli’s equation.

12.(a) (i)The plate of 600mm and length 400mm wide is impressed in a fluid of specific gravity0.9 and
kinematic viscosity of v =10-4 m2/s. The fluid is moving with the velocity of 6m/s. Determine

(a) Boundary layer thickness

(b) Shear stress at the end of the plate and

(c) Drag force on one side of the plate

(ii) Derive the chezy’s formula for loss of head due to friction in pipes.

(OR)
(b) A 150mm diameter pipe reduces in diameter abruptly to 100mm diameter. If the pipe carries water at
30lit/sec. calculate the pressure loss across the contraction. Take coefficient of contraction as 0.6.

13(a) Derive on the basis of dimensional analysis suitable parameters to present the thrust developed by a
propeller. Assume that the thrust P depends on the angular velocity ω, speed of advance V, diameter D,
dynamic viscosity µ, mass density and elasticity of the fluid medium which can be denoted by the speed of
sound in the medium C.

(OR)
(b) A pipe of diameter 1.5m is required to transport an oil of specific gravity 0.90 and viscosity 3x10 -2 poise
at the rate of 3000lit/sec. Test were conducted on a 15cm diameter pipe using water at 20 0C. Find the
velocity and the rate of flow in the model. Viscosity of water at 20 0C = 0.01poise.

14 (a) The internal and external diameters of the impeller of a centrifugal pump are 200mm and 400 mm
respectively. The pump is running at 1200rpm, the vane angle of the impeller at inlet and outlet are 20 0 and
300 respectively. The water enters the impeller radially and the velocity of flow is constant. Determine the
work done by the impeller per unit weight of water.

(OR)

(b) The cylinder bore diameter and stroke of a single acting reciprocating pump are 150mm and 300mm
respectively. The pump runs at 50rpm and lifts water to a height of 25m. The delivery pipe is 22 m long 100
mm in diameter. Find the theoretical discharge and theoretical power required to run the pump. If the
actual discharge is 4.2 liters/s, find the percentage of slip.

15 (a) Design a Pelton wheel for a head of 400m when running at 750rpm. The pelton wheel
develops12,110KW shaft power. The ratio of jet diameter to the wheel diameter is 1/6. The overall
efficiency,η0 =0.86, Coefficient of velocity C v = 0.985 and speed ratio,Ф = 0.45

under a head of 8m. The pheripheral velocity = 0.30 √ 2 gH and the radial velocity of the flow at inlet is 0.96
√ 2 gH . The wheel runs at 200rpm and the hydraulic losses in the turbine are 20% of the available energy.
Assume radial discharge, determine: (i) guide blade angle, (ii) wheel vane angle at inlet,(iii) diameter of
wheel at inlet and (iv) width of wheel at inlet. Draw the suitable velocity triangle.
