Math Adding Fractions

This lesson plan outlines a 60-minute lesson for a Year 6 class on adding fractions with the same or related denominators. The lesson objectives are for students to add mixed fractions with unlike denominators, add proper fractions with like denominators, and add proper fractions with unlike denominators. The lesson will begin with a motivation activity where students work out fraction addition problems on the whiteboard. Students will then work independently on differentiated worksheets before collaborating with partners on fraction addition using mini whiteboards or fraction cards. The lesson will conclude with a review of adding fraction strategies.

histories and cultures Asia

Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

 Add mixed fractions with unlike denominators (Extended students)

 Add proper fractions with like denominators (Enabling students)

 Add proper fractions with unlike denominators (Extending enabling students)

Teacher’s Prior Preparation / Organization: Provision for students at educational risk:

o Differentiated worksheets Enabling

Students will be guided by a teacher
o Example fractions Will be given explicit instructions
Will have peers show how they work through
o Deck of cards adding fractions

o Mathletics or Numero for students who finish early Extending

Students will work with peers at the same
level to answer adding fractions quickly
Assessment of the objectives:

Work samples
Students completed worksheets

Anecdotal notes
Students working with their partner engaging in different activities

Time: Motivation and Introduction:
Students sit facing the whiteboard Worksheets
10mins Pre-prepared are differentiated addition fractions.
Example fractions
Students spend some time working out the fractions on the board
using a mini whiteboard. Mini whiteboards
Once majority of students have finished, choose students to come Deck of cards
up to the whiteboard and work out prepared sums.
Using a different coloured marker Differentiated
worksheets
Ask the students to explain as they work out the addition of
fractions.

Students on the mat can watch how others work out adding
fractions.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key

Questions):

Students are to work independently completing their assigned

15mins worksheet.

Lower group to stay on the mat and work through questions with
teacher. Students are to be given guided support when working
through their worksheet.

When students are feeling comfortable working independently,

they can go back to their desks to complete their worksheet.

Collaborative Activities:
Once students have finished their worksheet, they are to work with
15mins a partner at the same level and use mini whiteboards to create
addition problems for their partner to solve.

Another activity that students can do with their partner is use a

deck of cards to deal out 3 cards for one fraction then their partner
deals three cards and they race to solve the problem. Students
decided if they would like to work out improper fractions or proper
fractions (Extended students)

Enabling students deal out 2 cards per player, ensure their

fractions are proper and not improper. (Enabling students)

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

5mins Students explain how to calculate adding fractions and finding the
lowest common denominator from the examples on the
whiteboard.
