Passage 1 (33-38)
(1) Hundreds of passengers have been stranded on a cruise ship off the Australian coast
after a potentially harmful growth was found on its hull. The Viking Orion was reportedly
denied permission to dock in Adelaide after authorities discovered "biofoul" - an accumulation
of microorganisms, plants, algae, or small animals. This can allow invasive species to be
imported into non-native habitats. Officials said the ship's hull must be cleaned before entering
Australia.
(2) Previous reports suggested the growth was a fungus, but this was not confirmed by
the Australian fisheries department. The department said the management of biofoul was a
"common practice for all arriving international vessels" and that the ship had to be cleaned to
avoid "harmful marine organisms" being transported into Australian waters. "Professional
divers were engaged directly by the vessel line/agent to clean the hull while at anchor outside
Australian waters," it added.
(3) The ship was also reportedly denied permission to dock at Christchurch, Dunedin
and Hobart. Kenn Heydrick, a passenger, said they had not been able to leave the ship since 26
December. Four scheduled port stops had been missed, he said, with the next due in Sydney on
4 January. "The intensity of frustration and anger is growing among passengers," he said. "The
majority of passengers are trying to make the best of things and enjoy extended time at sea.
But it is the excursions at four ports that we were looking forward to, and now are greatly
missed."
(4) Another passenger called the holiday a "trip from hell" on Twitter. "I have cried
repeatedly for both the significant financial hit after saving for two years and the loss of
memories and experiences," she said.
(5) The 14-deck, 930-person ship - which was built in 2018 - has reportedly dropped
anchor around 17 miles (27km) off the coast while the cleaning occurs. In a statement, operator
Viking admitted that a "limited amount of standard marine growth" was being cleared from the
ship's hull and said that this had caused the vessel to "miss several stops on this itinerary".
(6) But it said that it expected to sail towards the city of Melbourne in the coming hours,
where it would dock on 2 January. "Viking is working directly with guests on compensation
for the impact to their voyage," it added. In a letter on Friday, the ship's captain apologized that
"the current cruise falls short of your expectations" and said a member of Viking's customer
relations team would make an "adjusted offer of compensation" to guests in the coming days.

Passage 2 (39-42)
I don’t agree with the other answers. I guess you need to know a bit of John Denver’s
history. The original title was “Babe, I Hate to Go,” but his producer convinced him to change
it to the name it has today. In 1966, John was in love with Annie Martell, a student he’d met, I
think, at her college campus, St. Gustavus Adolphus in MN. He was a traveling musician and
he often had to leave her to do his shows. He did miss her and didn’t want to leave her. Knowing
that, the song explains itself. He does admit in the song to “playing around” although that can
have different degrees. He was indeed unfaithful to her after they were married and it was
ultimately one of the main reasons the marriage ended in 1982. They were married June 9,
1967, just over 50 years ago.
40. From the text above, we know that John Denver ………… .
1. was devoted to his true love 2. met his wife when he was a student

Passage 3 (43-46)
The “i Found Pet” platform, which is available on Line application, was launched in
June 2022 by a cat lover who goes by the name “Visanu”. Currently, ‘“i Found Pet” has 2,651
members who have registered 2,021 pets. Registrants of “i Found Pet” can post an alert if their
pet goes missing by providing information on the animal and where it was last seen. The
platform will check its database of registered pets for matching description in case the missing
pet has been adopted by another member.
If the pet is not in the database, the platform will send an alert to members in nearby
areas, to increase the chance of the lost pet being found. Visanu revealed that so far the platform
has received 1,676 cases of missing pets and has successfully found and returned 357 pets to
their worried owners.
He added that members can also get a QR code to be attached to their pet’s collar, so
that finders can scan and the platform can notify that this animal belongs to someone who has
reported a missing pet, or that it’s just out on a stroll. The owner will also receive a notification
of location every time the QR code is scanned.
The platform also has several useful features, including a message board for pet owners
where they can share photos of their beloved babies, and a calendar that alerts them when it is
time to take their pet to the vet. Visanu said he was targeting at least 100,000 members to
maximize the coverage and increase the chances of missing pets being found before something
bad happens.

Passage 4 (47-50)
Read the passage below and decide whether each statement is True (1) or False (2).
Two people who have been pen pals since the 1930s are still corresponding and
embracing technology to stay in touch having both turned 100. Geoff Banks, from Devon,
began writing to American Celesta Byrne after being given her details in 1938.
Communication, which began in their 20s, is still going strong between Honiton and Texas.
They also both said they planned to keep the long-running friendship going for as long as
possible.
Their correspondence began when they were in their 20s as part of an educational
project to put British and American students in contact. Over the decades, the letters kept
crossing the Atlantic. Since then, pen and paper have given way to emails, with the help of
their children, and now video calls. They also met in person when Mr. Banks visited New York
in 2002. Mr. Banks said it was a "source of great satisfaction to write to her for over all these
years".
He said, "She's a very interesting person. We exchange stories and she's very good to
talk to." However, with such a long-running friendship between the boy from England and the
girl from the US, the question has been asked if there was any ever any romance. Celesta Byrne
swiftly put such questions to rest, "No, we're just friends, like people who live next door. "You
ask how they're doing, you say a few words and then you both go to work.
47. In spite of new technologies, the two people still keep in touch through writing letters.
48. Geoff Banks and Celesta Byrne began to know each other through their friends.
49. Geoff Banks lives in Honitan while Celesta Byrne lives in Texas.
50. The children of the two play important role in keeping this relationship going.
