Module1 Topic1 Week2 Differential Equation
Module1 Topic1 Week2 Differential Equation
This module intends that all engineering students have a firm foundation in differential equations in preparation
for their degree-specific advanced mathematics courses. Students must also relate differential equations to
various practical engineering and scientific problems. To begin our study of this subject, we introduce different
classifications and solutions to problems regarding the differential equation from this module.
LEARNING OUTCOME
LEARNING CONTENT
Differential Equation (DE) contains one or more terms involving derivatives of one variable (the dependent
variable, y) with respect to another variable (the independent variable, x).
Example:
2
d x dx
1. + a +kx=0 , t is the independent variable and x is the dependent variable, while a and k is

∂u ∂u
2. − =x−2 y , x and y is the independent variable and u is the dependent variable,

ORDER of DE
The order of DE is the order of the Highest ordered derivative which appears in the equation.
Examples:
dy
a. First Order: =2 x 2 +5 x+ 6
dx
d2 y
b. Second Order: 2
=4 x 2+12 x +3

d3 y 2
c. Third Order: 3
=3 x + 6 x+ 4

DEGREE of DE
The degree of DE whose terms are polynomials in the derivatives is defined as the highest power of the highest
order derivative.
Examples:
