Information Sheet 1

CHAPTER I : ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE

LESSON : STANDARD MODEL - THE BIG BANG THEORY

NOMINAL DURATION: 1 WEEK

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. State and explain the Big Bang theory
2. Justify the theory through context-based ideas.
3. Differentiate the 2 eras.

THE BIG BANG THEORY

 This theory believes the concept of “singularity” which means “everything
comes from the one beginning”
 Everything starts from the atom-sized particle which is very small, hot, and
dense particle.
 Considered the Standard Model because it is widely accepted by most of the
sciemtists
 It is believed to happen 13.7 billion years ago
 Used energy, time, space, and matter
 Has 2 eras – Radiation Era and Matter Era

Radiation Era- has 8 Epochs (epoch is a unit of time smaller than era) mostly
concerned about the stability of energy/forces in the universe
1. Planck Epoch- no matter existed only energy. There was an unstable presence
of the 4 Super Forces of Nature namely: Gravity, Strong Nuclear, Weak, and
Electromagnetic. At this point, the gravity finds its balance and been
established.
2. Grand Unification Epoch- At this point, the strong nuclear finds its balance and
been establish following the gravity.
3. Inflation Epoch- Here, the stability of 2 Super forces of nature caused the
universe to expand rapidly from size of an atom to size of an orange
4. Electroweak Epoch- The remaining 2 Super Forces of Nature named Weak and
Electromagnetic Force found its balance and became stable.

5. Quark Epoch- All ingredients to form a universe are present but it is too hot that
the subatomic particles cannot bind.
6. Handron Epoch- The universe cooled down and the subatomic particles
formed.
7. Lepton Epoch- also known as “combination epoch”. The positively-charged
subatomic particle named proton attached to the neutral-charged subatomic
particle called neutron.
8. Nuclear Epoch- here, the combination of proton and neutron is protected and
covered by the nuclei. There, the first element called Helium was formed.

Matter Era- mostly concerned about the formation of matter in the universe
1. Atomic Epoch- also known as the “recombination epoch”. Here, the subatomic
particles proton and neutron are recombined and there was the attachment of
the third subatomic particle named “electron” to the nuclei. Electron is a
negatively-charged particle. This recombination resulted to the development of
the second element – the Hydrogen.
2. Galactic Epoch- As dusts and elements formed continue to multiply, the
formation of the first matter were formed, and that is the Cloud.
3. Stellar Epoch- stars, sun, moons, and other matters in the universe started to
form and find its balance.
