PURE MATHEMATICS
1. Solve the equation 4𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥 − 2𝑐𝑜𝑠2𝑥 = 1 for 00 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 3600

APPLIED MATHEMATICS
1. The probability that a baby boy is born in a family is  and the
probability that girl is born is  where 𝛼  1 Construct a sample space
for the possible ways children could have been born in a family of three
children. Hence construct the probability distribution table for the
number N, of boys in a family of three children.
2. A particle starts from rest at the origin (0, 0). Its acceleration in ms-2 is
given by 𝑎 = 6𝑖 − 4𝑗. Find its speed and position after t = 2seconds.

3. Mary’s chance of passing an examination is3. If she sits for four

examinations, find the probability that she passes:


(a) Only three examinations.
(b) Atleast one examination.
4. A heavy particle is projected from a point O at an angle of elevation.

6. A four-man team is to be selected from three women and 4 men. What is

7. Forces of 2N, 4N, 3N and 2N act along the sides PQ, QR, RS, SP, of a
square PQRS of side 2m. A force of 5N acts along QM where M is the
mid-point of PS. Calculate the;
(i) Magnitude of this resultant
(ii) angle this resultant makes with PQ.
8. For a set of 9 numbers ∑(𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )2 = 60 and ∑ 𝑥 2 = 285 . Find the mean of
the numbers.
9. (a)Find the range within which the exact value of 𝑧 lies, given that

(a) Find a vector expression for the velocity and position of the projectile at
time t.
(b) A particle is projected horizontally at 168ms 1. Find the magnitude
and direction of the velocity of the particle five seconds after projection
11.The senior five mathematics class while studying the topic on price
indices carries out a practical lesson of baking a class cake. The table
below shows the major items required and their corresponding prices in
2013 and 2014.

(iii) age range for the central 70% of the distribution.
(b) Hence or otherwise obtain the;
(i) mean age. (ii) modal age.
