O Level Chemistry CALA

Form 4

Topic: Safety Precautions In Chemical Use

Learners should be able to:

 Identify toxicity in chemicals by labels

 Follow instructions in using chemicals
 Use First Aid Kit
 Use safety clothing
 Use emergency numbers to call for help  Help the local community by raising
awareness

CALA TYPE: Pen and Paper

Context:

In Harare Town residents are exposing themselves to high levels of toxic chemicals in their
efforts to control garden pests, household pests and human pests. Learners are to raise awareness
in the community of the safe way to use toxic chemicals.

CALA Hint: Find out which chemicals are being used by residents to control rats, mosquitoes,
cockroaches and vegetable pests. Find out the toxicity of the chemicals and whether if they are
following the instructions.

From the context it is apparent that the student will be assessed on the following skills:

1. Gathering data by interview or questionnaire

2. Compiling data into tabular form
3. Analyzing the data
4. Presenting the results in a report
These are the main assessment objectives that will appear in the achievement standards. We can
summarize them in the concepts /skills

CONCEPTS/SKILLS

1. Data Collection Skills

2. Data Compilation Skills
3. Evaluation Skills
4. Report Writing

Dimensions/Skills to be assessed

1. Gathering data on use of toxic chemicals used to control pests in the home
2. Compiling the data
3. Evaluating the data
4. Report Writing

Assessment Objectives

Learners should be able to:

 Compile a list of questions used to conduct interviews/ design a questionnaire used to

gather data about toxic chemicals used to control pests
 Demonstrate knowledge of toxicity of a chemical by symbols and colour codes
 Demonstrate knowledge of First Aid in the event of disaster from misuse of chemical
 Conduct interviews and compile results in a table
 Evaluate the results
 Write a report on their finding

The Achievement Standards

List of expected competencies of the learner in executing the CALA. Basically it is the
breakdown of Dimensions / Skills to be Assessed.
Dimensions Achievement Standards
Gathering data on use of - At least 6 questions listed [3] , 5 [2] less than 5 [1]
toxic chemicals used to - Question on reading of instructions [1]
control pests in - Question on identifying colour or symbol [1]
the home - Question on linking colour or symbol to toxicity[1]
[12] - Question on use of protective clothes , gloves, work suit ,
goggles, face mask [1]
- Question on First Aid Kit [1]
- Question on emergence numbers [1]
- At least 30 people interviewed [3] , 20 [2], less than 20 [1]
Compiling Data [11] - Results in a table [1]
- Column of name of chemical [1]
- Column for toxicity [1]
- Column for number who have first aid kit [1]
- Column for number of users [1]
- Column for number who follow instructions [1]
- Column for number who have First Aid kits [1]
- Column for number who have emergence numbers [1]
- Column for number who wear safety clothing [3]
{gloves,suit,mask}

Evaluating Data [7] - Calculation of total number of users of each type of chemical eg
number of users of DDT [1]
- Calculation of percentage of the listed columns eg % number of
users of DDT [5]
- Comparison of percentage safe users vs percentage unsafe users [1]

Report Writing [5] - Reference to percentage safe users vs percentage unsafe users [1]
- Point out the main reason for unsafe use eg lack of protective
clothing or not reading instruction [1]
- Recommend reinforcement of the appropriate action [1]

- Suggest cultural methods to replace use of chemicals [2]

Table 1.1
This table can serve as both Achievement Standards and Marking Guide but we were instructed
to separate them into two distinct documents as follows in tables 1.2 and 1.3
