This project requires you to participate in two different work activities that contribute
to the health and safety of self and others.
To complete this assessment, you will carry out pre-start checks under your
supervisor and complete work activities following all the procedures and
instructions that apply to your work setting.
Vocational education and training is all about gaining and developing practical
skills that are industry relevant and that can help you to succeed in your chosen
career. For this reason, we are giving you the choice to base this project on a
real workplace or you may base this on the college where you are taking this
course (your RTO). This will mean that you are applying your knowledge and
skills in a relevant, practical and meaningful way to your own situation!
To do your assessment, you will need access to the following (from your real
workplace or RTO/college):
You must identify two activities you will complete for this project and the review the
WHS documents that apply to your work environment before you carry out work.
If you are basing the assessment on your own workplace (or a workplace where
you are doing a traineeship), you must choose two activities you will perform. You
must also review the WHS laws, and organisational policies and procedures you
need to follow to report and record WHS issues.
If you are basing this project on the college where you are taking this course your
assessor will give you two activities to perform at the facilities of your RTO. Your

• Outline the two activities you will perform as part of this project (these may be
two of your regular work activities)
• List the organisational policies and procedures that apply to your work
environment
• List the individuals or parties that you must contact when you have questions
and concerns about safety in your workplace
3. Meet with your supervisor to carry out pre-start checks and tasks
As part of this assessment, you will perform two activities in a way that is healthy
and safe for yourself and others. In order to do this, you must first carry out pre-
start systems and equipment checks according to the WHS policies and procedures
that you have identified.
If you are basing this project on the college where you are taking this course your
assessor will choose the activities and give you a time and place for performing
your pre-start checks. They will be playing the role of your supervisor and you will
be use the equipment at the college to do the pre-start checks and activities.
If you are basing this project on your own workplace, you must do your pre-start
equipment and system checks with your supervisor present. You must attach
evidence of carrying out pre-start checks to Section 1 of your Project Portfolio (this
may be a Checklist you must complete in your work setting that your supervisor can
confirm, or a video of you performing the checks).
Open your Project Portfolio to Section 1 and continue completing the questions.
While you are performing the checks, you must:
• make sure you follow all instructions, protocols, procedures and WHS
legislative requirements (you will be assessed on this).
• tell your supervisor (assessor) what you are doing as you perform the checks,
and how the checks will help to prevent injury
After you have completed the checks, you must
• ask your supervisor to describe any recent incident that has happened in your
work environment

Before you do the work activities, open your Project Portfolio to Section 2 and
complete the Hazard Report. In order to do this, you need to:
• Inspect the area where you will perform each activity and identify any existing
and potential hazards
5. Report hazards
You must report any existing or potential hazard you identified in the previous
activity, to your supervisor.
Develop a short email to your supervisor and attach the Hazard Report.
The text of the email should be error free, written in an appropriate (polite,
business-like) style.
You must attach proof of your email to Section 2 of your Project Portfolio.
You must carry out two activities in a safe way. This will include using at least one
Standard Operating Procedure to perform your two activities.
Open your Project Portfolio to Section 2 and continue completing the questions. In
order to do this, you need to:
• Ensure you are wearing the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
before you start if this is necessary
You must identify and report an incident. This may be an incident that happened
while you completed your work activities, or you may report the incident your

You must meet with at least two colleagues to seek assistance on WHS issues you
have identified.

with must be the designated WHS persons you identified (activity step 2 of this
assessment task). You must attach evidence of your meeting to Section 3 of your
Project Portfolio.
