Film Review
Gladiator,
Gladiator is one of those rare movies that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages. It
really has something for everyone, from children to adults.
Gladiator is a story about the many faces of power. Set in the second half of the
second century, the tale begins with Rome’s continued conquest of the world.
Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, a brilliant and celebrated Roman General and
tactician, is preparing his legion for battle against Germanic tribes. What follows is a
brutal, bloody battle. Maximus’ triumph is short lived. Another face of power
emerges. Caesar’s son, Commodus, excellently portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, in his
own grasp for absolute power, sets the plot rolling. In his attempt to rid himself of
Maximus, many new faces of power are revealed. Though he is forced into exile and
slavery, Maximus, tries to control his hatred. It is in the gladiator ring that he
emerges as a new power intent on killing Commodus. The more Commodus tries to
crush him, the stronger Maximus becomes through the one power stronger than
anything else in Rome: the will of the people.

All the elements of man’s free will are exposed in this film, both the negative and
positive. Even though it is rather distressing, you can almost say this story seems a
mirror, reflecting a similarity to current times.Gladiator asks the question. “What is
the desire of blood sport?” Is it an escape from reality? It is not difficult to link the
perversity of Rome to some of today’s practices. The costumes are accurate and the
battle and fight scenes are realistic. The film is filled with lots of action and lots of
death one would expect with a gladiator tale. But, that’s not to say that the action is
what carries the movie. No way. The story is compelling. You are not watching
actors in a movie, you are there, in the story with them.

A. Life is very different in London. I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to living here. Would
you believe that we have to wear a uniform to go to school? It’s awful! A blue skirt and
white blouse, not to mention a pair of long white socks. Besides, there is nothing to do in
the evening. All the shops close by 4.30 P.M and pubs are only open till 11p.m

F. That’s all for now. I must do my homework for tomorrow’s English class. The teacher

Please write soon and tell me all the news. I miss you so much.
G. Oh, how I missed being with you during the holidays this year! I’ve already made some
very nice friends, but don’t worry-no one could ever replace you as my best friend!
Everything in England is completely opposite to Morocco. But I’m so glad that my stay
here will only last until mid-August. Then I’ll come home, and you and I can spend nice

Dear Editor,
I was so interested in your article about road accidents in yesterday’s issue of your
newspaper and I would like to share my sad story with the readers.
When I was only eight years old, my mother was severely injured in a car accident on
the highway. Luckily, she survived, but many of us know people who have not survived
these car tragedies. Driving too fast has always been one of the main causes of the
horrifying accidents.
Our sense of security on the highway would increase greatlyif we would reduce the
speed limit per hour on major roads

Yours Sincerely,
Susan Wakefield.
