Circulatory System:
The circulatory system, also known as the
cardiovascular system, is a complex
network of blood vessels, the heart, and
blood. It serves as a transportation
system that delivers oxygen, nutrients,
hormones, and other vital substances to
cells throughout the body while removing
waste products.

Respiratory System:
The respiratory system is responsible for
the exchange of gases, primarily oxygen
and carbon dioxide, between the body and
the external environment. It includes the
respiratory tract and the lungs.
NICOTINE
Nicotine is the chemical in
tobacco that keeps you smoking.
Nicotine reaches the brain within
seconds of taking a puff. In the
brain, nicotine increases the
release of brain chemicals called
neurotransmitters, which help
regulate mood and behavior.
According to the Global Adult
Tobacco Survey (GATS)
conducted in 2015, approximately
23.8% of the adult population in
the Philippines were smokers.
1. Popularity
of Smoking:
The prevalence of smoking is
higher among males (47.7%)
compared to females (9.0%) in
the Philippines.
In the Philippines, the
National Nutrition
Survey of 2018
2. Youth
showed that 8.9% of
Smoking:
students aged 13 to
15 were current
tobacco users.
"Sin Tax Law" (Republic Act No.
10351) in 2012, which imposed
higher taxes on tobacco products to
reduce consumption.

-Over 20% of non-communicable
smoking disease-related deaths (ex: ischemic
heart disease, stroke, diabetes,
COPD, lung cancer, etc.) in the
Philippines, are attributable to
tobacco use.
• Smoking cigarettes can lead to
nicotine addiction and can cause
many types of cancer, including
cancers of the lung, larynx,
mouth, esophagus, throat,
kidney, bladder, pancreas,
stomach, and cervix, and acute
myeloid leukemia.
• Smoking cigarettes also
causes other health problems,
including heart disease, stroke,
and lung diseases, such as
emphysema and chronic
bronchitis.
SPECIFIC SMOKING-RELATED DISEASE THAT
AFFECTS CIRCULATORY AND RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

ASTHMA
- Chronic and allergic condition
that cause breathing difficulties
- Smoking can exacerbate
asthma symptoms and make the
condition more difficult to
manage, particularly in children.
- TRIGGERS – include pollen,
dust, smoke, pets, exercise,
certain foods or common
bacteria and viruses

PNEUMONIA
- An infection of the lungs caused by
bacteria, virus, fungi
- it cause inflammation of the alveoli
and filled it with pus and it can cause
death if not treated
- Smokers are at an increased risk of
developing pneumonia, as smoking
weakens the lung's defenses against • Patient has pneumonia in the right lung

BRONCHITIS
- Bronchitis is an infection of the main
airways of the lungs (bronchi),
causing them to become irritated and
inflamed.
- Smoking can cause chronic
bronchitis, characterized by
inflammation and irritation of the
bronchial tubes, leading to coughing
and excessive mucus production.

EMPHYSEMA
- a chronic disease caused by
persisted exposure to tobacco
chemicals or pollutants like
fumes or coal
- it damages the air sacs and
breathing passages
- it happened when lung tissue
is destroyed, and air sacs are
lost

LUNG CANCER
- it can be acquired due to long-
term exposure to cigarette
smoke
- the carcinogenic chemical from
the cigarettes can cause the
growth of the malignant cells
(tumors) uncontrolled and take
up the area in the lungs.
SOME DISEASES OF RESPIRATORY AND
CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS

TUBERCULOSIS
- A disease caused by bacteria
called Mycobacterium
tuberculosis that usually attack
the lungs, but they can also
damage other parts of the body
- Symptoms include bad cough
lasting for 3 weeks or more,
discolored or bloody sputum,
weakness or fatigue, night sweats,
slight fever in the afternoon
SOME DISEASES OF RESPIRATORY AND
CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS
COVID-19
- is an infectious disease caused by
a newly discovered coronavirus
and be characterized as a
pandemic because of its rapid
increase in the number of cases
around the globe
- affects different people in
different ways. Most infected
people will develop mild to
moderate illness and recover
without hospitalization but in
some it can cause death

SPECIFIC SMOKING-RELATED DISEASE THAT

AFFECTS CIRCULATORY AND RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
HEART ATTACK
- occurs when the flow of blood to the
heart is blocked.
- the blockage is most often a build up of
fat, cholesterol and other substances,
which form a plaque in the arteries that
feed the heart (coronary arteries).
- sometimes, a plaque can rupture and
form a clot that blocks blood flow.
- Also known as Myocardial infarction

HYPERTENSION
- is another name for high blood
pressure.
- it can lead to severe health
complications and increase the risk
of heart disease, stroke, and
sometimes death.
- Blood pressure is the force that a
person's blood exerts against the
walls of their blood vessels.

SYSTEM

ATHEROSCLEROSIS
▪is a chronic and progressive medical condition characterized
by the buildup of fatty deposits, cholesterol, calcium, and
other substances on the inner walls of arteries.
▪is a common and significant cause of heart disease, stroke, and
other vascular disorders.

STROKE
- is a disease that affects the
arteries leading to and
within the brain.
- A stroke occurs when a
blood vessel that carries
oxygen and nutrients to the
brain is either blocked by a
clot or bursts (or ruptures).
TIPS FOR TAKING CARE OF RESPIRATORY AND
CIRCULATORY SYTEM

1.Exercise regularly
2.Eat healthy balanced diet
3.Stop smoking. Stay away from people who
smoke.
4.Manage your stress. Sleep for 8 hours.
5.Drink more water.
Impact of Lifestyle on Respiratory and
Circulatory Systems
SMOKING HABITS:
A person who smokes cigarettes regularly may experience reduced
lung function due to the harmful chemicals in tobacco, leading to
decreased oxygen intake and increased risk of lung diseases like
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Smoking can also lead to the constriction of blood vessels,
increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as
hypertension, heart attack, and stroke.
Impact of Lifestyle on Respiratory and
Circulatory Systems
REGULAR EXERCISE ROUTINE:
Someone who maintains a consistent exercise routine
experiences improved lung capacity and efficiency,
enhancing oxygen intake and overall respiratory health.
Regular exercise can also promote better cardiovascular
health by strengthening the heart, lowering blood pressure,
and reducing the risk of heart diseases.
Impact of Lifestyle on Respiratory and
Circulatory Systems
ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION:
Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to conditions such
as cardiomyopathy, which weakens the heart muscle and
impairs its ability to pump blood effectively.
Alcohol can also depress the central nervous system,
potentially causing shallow breathing and decreased oxygen
intake.
Impact of Lifestyle on Respiratory and
Circulatory Systems
STRESS AND MENTAL HEALTH:
Chronic stress and anxiety can contribute to high blood
pressure, which increases the risk of cardiovascular
problems.
Relaxation techniques and stress management can help
maintain healthier circulatory systems.
Impact of Lifestyle on Respiratory and
Circulatory Systems
SLEEP PATTERNS:
Irregular sleep patterns and chronic sleep deprivation can
lead to high blood pressure, increased heart rate, and a
weakened immune system, affecting both respiratory and
circulatory health.
Consistent, restorative sleep is essential for maintaining
these systems.
Impact of Lifestyle on Respiratory and
Circulatory Systems
HYDRATION LEVELS:
Dehydration can thicken the blood, making it harder for the
circulatory system to pump blood effectively.
Staying adequately hydrated is essential for maintaining
proper blood circulation.
