Going to Malawi
When I heard about the special expedition to Malawi, I knew I had to go. It was obviously a once-in-a-
lifetime opportunity. Participation was open to students from all the schools in our area, but the problem
was that there were only 18 places. 16 However, I didn’t let that stop me from trying. I had to write
an essay about why I wanted to participate, and then I was invited for an interview. It was really intense,
and I was asked difficult questions. 17 And I was right. A few days later, I was told I had a place!
The next thing I had to do was to find a way of paying for the trip. So many young people are trying to
raise money to go on trips and expeditions these days, so it was important to come up with a good idea.
One of my friends told me about a beginner's triathlon. You have to swim 400 metres, cycle 12 km and
run 2.5 km. He said it as a joke because everyone knows I’m not good at sport. 18 So was everyone
else. Nobody thought I could do it. But I did, and I raised £480!
Finally, we left for Malawi. I was so excited during the flight and couldn’t wait to start working. We did a
lot of work at schools. We painted buildings, did small building projects and worked in many school
gardens. 19 Malawi is a poor country with a different culture. Women there do most of the hard
work on the farms, and many families haven’t got a lot of money or material possessions. 20 I knew
it would be an incredible experience, and it certainly was. I can truly say that it has changed my life.
