Lynn’s Blog: India

I have just come back from an amazing day in New Delhi, the capital of India. I saw many places in the
city and I took some incredible photos.
The most interesting place we went to was the National Gandhi Museum. I had heard the name Gandhi
before, but I didn’t know much about him until today.
At the museum, I learned that Gandhi was a very special person. He was a small and quiet man. He
dressed in simple clothes and lived in a very simple house. He didn’t look or behave like a great leader,
but he changed the history of India. The Indian people loved and admired Gandhi so much that they gave
him the name “Mahatma”, which means “Great Soul”.
Mahandas Karamchard Gandhi was born in India in 1869. When he was 19, he went to London to study
law. Then he moved to South Africa, where he worked as a lawyer. In 1915, Gandhi returned to India.
At the time, India was ruled by the British and the British often treated the Indians badly. Gandhi
believed that his country should be free, but he didn’t believe in using violence. So he organised
peaceful demonstrations against the British.
In the end, Gandhi succeeded. The British left India and it became an independent country in 1947.
Sadly, Gandhi was shot and killed in 1948 by a man who didn’t agree with his beliefs.
The next time I have to write about a person I admire, I think I’ll choose Gandhi!

Going to Malawi
When I heard about the special expedition to Malawi, I knew I had to go. It was obviously a once-in-a-
lifetime opportunity. Participation was open to students from all the schools in our area, but the problem
was that there were only 18 places. 16 However, I didn’t let that stop me from trying. I had to write
an essay about why I wanted to participate, and then I was invited for an interview. It was really intense,
and I was asked difficult questions. 17 And I was right. A few days later, I was told I had a place!

The next thing I had to do was to find a way of paying for the trip. So many young people are trying to
raise money to go on trips and expeditions these days, so it was important to come up with a good idea.
One of my friends told me about a beginner's triathlon. You have to swim 400 metres, cycle 12 km and
run 2.5 km. He said it as a joke because everyone knows I’m not good at sport. 18 So was everyone
else. Nobody thought I could do it. But I did, and I raised £480!

Finally, we left for Malawi. I was so excited during the flight and couldn’t wait to start working. We did a
lot of work at schools. We painted buildings, did small building projects and worked in many school
gardens. 19 Malawi is a poor country with a different culture. Women there do most of the hard
work on the farms, and many families haven’t got a lot of money or material possessions. 20 I knew
it would be an incredible experience, and it certainly was. I can truly say that it has changed my life.

A In addition, I also learned about the way of life there.

B For this reason, Malawi is called the warm heart of Africa.

C In spite of this, people there always seem to be happy.

D All the same, I had a good feeling about it.

E Teachers in schools in Malawi work very hard.

F He was surprised when I took him seriously.

G I didn’t think I had a chance.

H It wasn’t easy and I thought about quitting.
