Stoner’s main design weakness in the AR has always been with
extraction. Adding strength to the extractor spring doesn’t help

The Whitworth rife Like John Jacob (see below), Sir Joseph
Whitworth did not start out as a frearms designer. In fact, de-
spite the excitement his rife system generated among enthusiasts,
Sir Joseph’s renown really lays in other areas.
Prior to beginning his study of ballistics and long-distance shoot-
ing, Whitworth was an accomplished engineer who had established
his bona fdes with, among a number of other things, the design of
a system of precision screw threads that are still in use today.
Eventually, his reputation grew to the point that he was invited
by the British to work out a method of mass production for ser-
vice rifes. Inspired by an octagonal rifing system devised by his
colleague on the Board of Ordnance project, Westley Richards,
Whitworth came up with his own hexagonally bored rife barrel
