INTRODUCTION

Before the invention of the

printing press, books were
handwritten and were very
expensive and time-
consuming to produce.
Gutenberg’s printing press
made it possible to
produce books much more
quickly and cheaply.

The printing press revolutionized the way

information was shared and disseminated,
and it played a crucial role in the
development of modern education, science,
and culture. The printing press made it
possible to print books in large quantities,
which helped to spread knowledge and
ideas throughout society.

revolutionized society there before being
further developed in Europe in the 15th
century by Johannes Gutenberg and his
invention of the Gutenberg press.

press? Gutenberg was the son of a patrician from Mainz. What
little information exists about him, other than that he
had acquired skills in metalwork, comes from
documents of financial transactions. Exiled from Mainz
in the course of a bitter struggle between the guilds of
that city and the patricians, Gutenberg moved to
Strassburg (now Strasbourg, France), probably
between 1428 and 1430. Records put his presence
there from 1434 to 1444. He engaged in such crafts as
gem cutting, and he also taught a number of pupils.
FINDINGS
Gutenberg's press was the combined effort of several
discoveries and inventions. The printing press was built
around the traditional screw press, a precursor to today's
drill press, with an added matrix on which individually-cast

wood as in the block printing method. Gutenberg also
created a unique oil-based ink that transferred from his
metal type to the printing substrate much more effectively
than the water-based inks that other printers of the era
used. In order to print a page, Gutenberg would arrange the
necessary letters on the matrix and coat them in his ink.
The matrix was then mounted on the contact end of the
modified screw press and lowered until it struck the paper
underneath. The process, while labor- intensive, allowed
Gutenberg to print pages at a much greater rate than
printers using the block printing method or those doing
manuscript work.
FINDINGS
In 1436, Johaness Gutenberg, a German goldsmith,
began designing a machine capable of producing

invented? The printing press made it possible to produce books
and other texts quickly, accurately, and less
expensively, which allowed them to be reproduced in
greater numbers. Before the printing press, books
belonged primarily to the upper classes. But with
books cheaper and more readily available, the middle
class could access them as well. This led to an increase
in the literacy and education of the public. The
development of the printing press has been credited
with helping to usher in the modern era by enabling
the spread of information across all levels of society.

informing large numbers of people about
current events, business opportunities, cultural
and religious practices, and educational
purposes.
