What is dance?

 Dance is an art form that involves movement of the body that is set to music.
 Dance may be participatory, social, performed, ceremonial, or competitive.
 It is an important part of ceremonies, rituals, celebrations, and entertainment.
 Choreography may be performed solo, with a partner, or with a group; either way, each dance tells a
story
Oldest of the arts.
 The beginnings of music have been traced to the dance. For these reasons it has been called mother of
the arts.
 An Art - a dance may tell a story, set a mood, or express an emotion.
 A form of recreation - provided fun, relaxation, and companionship
What are the reasons why people dance?
• It has been used in worship. To show praise
• It plays a role in courtship. Express love
• It serves as a form of acquaintance for a man and woman. Relation ship to communicate
• It is an expression of the joy one feels.
• As in old times, it brings magical powers to people. Example sa rituals
• It brings victory or somehow restores health to life. Celebration or relaxation
• It even breaks the monotony of the daily activities.
• It serves to entertain others.
• It gives beauty and inspiration to others. Interpretative dance
• It provides personal and effectiveness of communication. Telling stories
What are the benefits of Dance?
Physical - Develops Cardiovascular and muscular endurance
– Improves coordination, balance, flexibility
– Lowers body mass index height/ weight
– Improves metabolism sweat
– Helps recover coordination and neuromuscular skills connection of brain to the part of the body
Mental/Emotional- Helps keep the brain sharp
– Decreases incidence of dementia and Alzheimer's disease steps to remember
– Decreases depressive symptoms release of stress or anger (emotion)
– Increases self-esteem and improves body image
– Aids in releasing emotional and physical tension
Social - Give sense of togetherness within a group interact to others
– Encourage positive social interaction and interpersonal relationship in a group
– Contributes to the individual's potential for self-actualization on society skills
Cultural - Promotes cultural values.
Types of Dance
Ballet serves as a backbone for many other styles of dance, as many other dance genres are based on ballet.
Ballet is based on techniques that have been developed over centuries. Ballet uses music and dance to tell
stories. Ballet dancers have the ability to transport an audience to another world.
Jazz is a fun dance style that relies heavily on originality and improvisation. Many jazz dancers mix different
styles into their dancing, incorporating their own expression. Jazz dancing often uses bold, dramatic body
movements, including body isolations and contractions.
Hip-Hop is a dance style, usually danced to hip-hop music, that evolved from the hip-hop culture. Hip-hop
includes various moves such as breaking, popping, locking and krumping, and even house dance.
Modern dance is a dance style that rejects many of the strict rules of classical ballet, focusing instead on the
expression of inner feelings. Modern dance was created as a rebellion against classical ballet, emphasizing
creativity in choreography and performance.

Folk Dance
- Folk dance refers to a variety of dances developed by groups or communities, as opposed to being made up
by a choreographer. Folk dances are often performed at social events. Reflect the life of a country/region

Body
- Is the mobile figure or shape, felt by the dancer, seen by others.
Action
– is any human movements included in the act of dancing, it can include dance steps, facial expressions, lifts,
carries catches and even everyday movements such as walking
Space
- They may stay in one place and move parts of their body or whole body, or they may travel from one place to
another. area
Time
- The keyword for element of time is when. Human movement is naturally rhythmic in the board sense that we
alternate activity and rest.
Energy
- is about how it refers to the force of an action and can mean both the physical energy that derives and
characterizes movement

Fundamental Position of arms and feet


There are five fundamental or basic positions in dance that are commonly termed as 1st position, 2nd position,
3rd position, 4th position, and 5th position of the feet and arms.
