ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND

AWARNESS PROGRAM

Environment Education, Awareness and Training (EEAT) is a

Central Sector scheme implemented by Ministry of
Environment, Forest and Climate Change with the objective,
inter alia, to promote environmental awareness and mobilize
students' participation for environment conservation. The
effectiveness of environmental education for sustainable
development based on active teaching and learning at high
school level-a case study from Puducherry and Cuddalore
regions, India.

What is environmental education and awareness?

Environmental education is a process that allows individuals to

explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving, and
take action to improve the environment. As a result, individuals
develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues and
have the skills to make informed and responsible decisions.

What is Environmental Education?

Environmental education is a process that allows individuals to

explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving, and
take action to improve the environment. As a result, individuals
develop a deeper understanding environmental issues and
have the skills to make informed and responsible decisions. The
components of environmental education are:
 Awareness and sensitivity to the environment and
environmental challenges
 Knowledge and understanding of the environment and environmental
challenges
 Attitudes of concern for the environment and motivation to improve or
maintain environmental quality
 Skills to identify and help resolve environmental challenges
 Participation in activities that lead to the resolution of environmental
challenges
 Environmental education does not advocate a particular viewpoint or
course of action. Rather, environmental education teaches individuals
how to weigh various sides of an issue through critical thinking and it
enhances their own problem-solving and decision-making skills.

How to Promote Environmental Awareness

Before you can begin promoting environmental awareness in your community,

you must first make sure that you have a thorough understanding of
environmental issues. Stay up to date on environmental news, read books and
other materials, and learn about the issues affecting your own community. It’s
much easier to talk to others about the environment if you’ve already taken the
time to educate yourself.

Numerous resources are available to promote environmental awareness and

education: group learning (inside or outside of the classroom), informational
and inspirational seminars, online courses, books, articles, videos, and
brochures. These are just a few of the tools that can get you started in raising
awareness about the environment.

“Biodiversity Conservation” In the year 2008 Jharkhand Swabhiman organised

a 1 day awareness campaign on the topic Biodiversity conservation on
31/03/2008. This program was funded by Gram Vikash Kendra, Jamshedpur.
Sukurhuttu panchayt of Kanke block, Ranchi was chose for this program. A
rally was organised for the locals to conclude the program.
“Climate Change” In the year 2009 Jharkhand Swabhiman organised a 1 day
awareness campaign on the topic climate.
Jharkhand school uses innovative methods to attract students
Have you seen classrooms that look like train compartments, or gigantic
"snake-and-ladder" game painted on the floor of a school? Well, a school
in a remote village in Jharkhand's East Singhbumn district is making all
efforts to attract students to attend school. And the efforts of journalist-
turned-teacher Arvind Tiwary have paid off, as the dropout rate in
Upgraded Middle School in Tangrain village in Potka block is now zero.

Classrooms that look like train compartments, a gigantic “snake and

ladder” game board painted on the floor and some innovative teaching
methods have attracted students to a school in a remote village in
Jharkhand’s East Singhbumn district. As the efforts of journalist-turned-
teacher Arvind Tiwary have paid off, the dropout rate in Upgraded Middle
School in Tangrain village in Potka.

Arvind Tiwary applies innovative ideas to enroll children and motivate

them to pursue studies seriously ever since he himself joined the
government school, about 45 kilometers from Jamshedpur, in 2017.

During the Covid-19 lockdown, Tiwary gave three rooms of the five-room
single-story school building the shape of railway compartments. He said
that the changes have attracted students. He added that he spent money
from his pocket on the makeover. With the new enrollments, the total
number of students from standards 1 to 8 has gone up to 269, Tiwary said.
Admitting that the dropout rate in rural pockets is high, 50-year-old
Tiwary said the majority of tribal children could not express their
problems to those who come from outside.
To break this inhibition, Tiwary who is a resident of Jamshedpur city said
he tried to approach them through sports and games. “I painted a large
snake and ladder board on a concrete platform on the school campus, and
it was an instant hit with the students,” he said. They started playing the
game and Tiwary himself sometimes took part in it which helped break the
ice. Tiwary’s other efforts too turned the school the most sought after one
in the vicinity as far as enrollment of children is concerned.

He used to roam around in villages carrying textbooks, storybooks, pens,

pencils and crayons during the lockdown period to inculcate reading habits
among children and solve problems in subjects like mathematics at their
doorstep.

Environmental issues
Environmental issues are disruptions in the usual function of ecosystems.
[1] Further, these issues can be caused by humans (human impact on the
environment)[2] or they can be natural. These issues are considered serious
when the ecosystem cannot recover in the present situation, and catastrophic if
the ecosystem is projected to certainly collapse.
Environmental protection is the practice of protecting the natural
environment on the individual, organizational or governmental levels, for the
benefit of both the environment and humans. Environmentalism is
a social and environmental movement that addresses environmental issues
through advocacy, legislation education, and activism.[3]
Environment destruction caused by humans is a global, ongoing problem.
[4] Water pollution also cause problems to marine life.[5] Most scholars think
that the project peak global world population of between 9-10 billion people,
could live sustainably within the earth's ecosystems if human society worked to
live sustainably within planetary boundaries.[6][7][8] The bulk of
environmental impacts are caused by excessive consumption
Types

Major current environmental issues may include climate

change, pollution, environmental degradation, and resource depletion.
The conservation movement lobbies for protection of endangered species and
protection of any ecologically valuable |natural areas]], genetically modified
foods and global warming. The UN system has adopted international
frameworks for environmental issues in three key issues, which has been
encoded as the "triple planetary crises": climate change, pollution, and
biodiversity loss.[13]

Human impact

Human impact on the environment (or anthropogenic environmental impact)

refers to changes to biophysical environments[14] and
to ecosystems, biodiversity, and natural resources[15] caused directly or
indirectly by humans. Modifying the environment to fit the needs of society (as
in the built environment) is causing severe effects[16][17] including global
warming,[14][18][19] environmental degradation[14] (such as ocean
acidification[14][20]), mass extinction and biodiversity loss,[21][22][23]
[24] ecological crisis, and ecological collapse. Some human activities that
cause damage (either directly or indirectly) to the environment on a global scale
include population growth,[25][26][27] neoliberal economic policies[28]
[29] and rapid economic growth,
[30] overconsumption, overexploitation, pollution, and deforestation. Some
of the problems, including global warming and biodiversity loss, have been
proposed as representing catastrophic risks to the survival of the human
species
