The present State of the Philippine Education
In today’s society, education plays a vital role in a person’s life especially in creating
opportunities for the future as well as to the development of the society as whole. It is evident in
our society that some people give respect based on the educational background of one person.
Wherein, people see white collar job better than the other. Indeed, that education helps a person
to improve the skills, knowledge as well as develop personality and attitude. It is the way people
have good understanding about the society he/she lives in. As individual learns more, his view
and understanding broadens and his capacity to think critically and solve problems becomes
deeper.
Stated in Article XIV, Section 1, of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, “The State shall
protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels, and shall take
appropriate steps to make such education accessible to all." The reason for free education for
primary and secondary schools, so that even the marginalized sector in our community can be
able to send their children to school. The Philippine government provides assistance for the
marginalized to provide basic needs of their families including the educational support.
Educational Assistance, scholarship as well as Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program(4P’s) are
some of the programs launched by the government.
The Philippine government is obliged to provide quality education to the various learning
areas in education to promote and foster skills. As stated in the Article II Section 17 of the 1987
Philippine Constitution “The State shall give priority to education, science and technology, arts,
culture and sports to foster patriotism and nationalism, accelerate social progress, and promote
total human liberation and development.” Some of the agencies concerned with Filipinos’
education in different levels and areas are the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on
Higher Education (CHED), & Technical-Vocational Education Skills and Authority (TESDA).
Before Republic Act No. 10533 also known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 was
implemented, Philippines is one of the few countries in the world that only provides 10-year pre-
university program (Yap, R, 2011). During that time Education specialists think that students
who
are created in this program are trained enough considering the international standards. They think
that students need to be at a higher in-depth level of knowledge to become individuals that can

The additional two years for the Secondary level of education, it is anticipated to produce
work-ready if not college-ready students since they were already trained in the senior high school
level on their respective strands. But in today’s reality, when a Senior High School applies for a
job, they don’t easily get hired since the industries looks for college graduate whom they think
are more knowledgeable and has the skillset to do a certain job. This might be one of the
challenges that the Department of Education must address, to explain and assure industries that
these graduates from Senior High School are also competent in doing their job and that The K-12
program's implementation can increase students' proficiency in foundational skills for lifelong
learning employment. The administration has in fact worked extremely hard to produce learning
that prepares students to meet the problems of the future society.
While the current status of the curriculum in the educational system is still being studied
and flourished, the Department of Education launched a new curriculum called “Matatag
Curriculum”. “MATATAG” stands for stands for "MAke the curriculum relevant to produce job-
ready, active, and responsible citizens; TAke steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education

As an educator, seeing the daily scenarios and different dilemma inside the school, I think
the Department of Education should focus first on the needs of learners in a school. It is evident
that many schools are still in need of classrooms, learning materials and even the lack of teachers
teaching their specialization is also a problem in the Philippine Education. By implementing
another curriculum while the previous one was not flourished, it might just result to a bigger
concern in the days to come. In order to attain the quality education stated in the Article XIV,
Section 1, of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, the Department of Education or the government
perse must address the needs of the learners needs since all learners are entitled to high-quality
education, a relevant curriculum, appropriate assessment, and valued learning opportunities.
