Week 2).
Social sciences are vital part of today's culture and touch on all areas of life. It has been very beneficial to us and has
helped us grow as a society. As such, the need for social science emerged when the society grew and experts thought
of analyzing the society using sciences. Social sciences are group of academic disciplines that study human aspects of
the world, in particular those involving social behavior and society. These disciplines, focusing on the study of human
social behavior, includes a variety of ways – from understanding how minds work, to how societies as a whole
function. The major social sciences are Anthropology , Economics, Geography, History, Linguistics, Political Science,
Psychology Demography and Sociology.
Anthropology is a social science that deals with the study of humankind in all is aspects: culture and development. It
is the study of relationship between biological traits and socially acquired characteristics. It is the study of what makes
us human which is why sometimes called as the study of human.
Economics is the study of how individuals and societies make decisions about ways to use scarce resources to fulfill
wants and needs. It seeks to understand people’s activities concerning production, distribution and consumption of
goods and services.
Geography focuses on the distribution of the features of the physical environment and of the people who use those
features. It also deals with the study of natural environment and how it influences social and cultural development.
History which means “story of man”, is a social science in the sense that it is a systematic attempt to learn about and
verify past events and relate them to one another and to the present. In other words, it studies the past of humanity.
Linguistics is the scientific study of language. It deals with the study of every aspect of language. It enables us to
understand how language works, and how it is used, developed and preserved over time.
Political Science can be defined as the systematic study of state and government. It focuses on the theory and practice
of government and politics. Sometimes, it can be simply defined as the study of politics.
Psychology derived from the Greek words “psyche” (soul/mind) and “logos” (study), is the scientific study of human
behavior and the mental process that is tested through scientific research (should be systematic in approach). It is a
multifaceted discipline and includes many sub-fields of study such areas as human development, sports, health,
clinical, social behavior and cognitive processes. Moreover, Psychology aims to describe, explain, predict, and
influence behaviour.
Sociology from the Latin word “societus” (society) and the Greek word “logos” (science or study or advanced study)
or the science/study of society, was coined by August Comte who is known as the father of Sociology. Demography is
the scientific study of human society and social interactions. Sociologists assume that behavior is influenced by
people’s social, political, occupational and intellectual groupings and by the particular settings in which they find
themselves at one time or another.
Demography is the branch of social science which deals with the size, structure, and distribution of population, along
with the spatial and temporal changes in them in response to birth, migration, ageing and death. It is also the study of
population over time and over place. Demography is very useful for understanding social and economic problems and
identifying potential solutions. The study of social science is important because its learning helps us gain knowledge
of the society we live in.
